Ball Drilling Question
« on: November 29, 2010, 07:33:24 AM »
Right now we have a new proshop and I am having trouble with the size of the finger holes he is drilling..  They are really much smaller than my other driller and this isnt the first time the holes came up small..  Is there a standard size or something or different people do what they please..  Can my new person measure the size of the holes in my ball or something?

I am sure the ball drillers will answer this better.

I use inserts so it is a standard size bit.  But if the bit gets old, the holes become smaller.  I have noticed this when I get a new ball and the inserts seem larger than the previous couple of balls I got.  Not sure the lifespan of drill bits, especially the size for inserts.

This is my opinion only though.

My pro shop always makes his finger holes a bit on the small side when the ball is done for new customers, then opens it up to their liking before they hand over the money. And if still unhappy, he'll fix it up for free as many times after that. You can always err on the side of smaller, but not so much on the side of bigger.

Does that sound like your case, or are your finger holes wayyyy off?

Hopefully he's measuring the fingers of the bowlers...

There is no "standard" size since we are all different.

I really thought each driller had same type of training and followed the same type of rules when when drilling a ball but now I see different..  I keep all my inserts the same size and right now we are having some issues...

In your original post you made it sound like you don't use inserts.  In your last post you say inserts.  So do you use grips or not?  Just want to be clear before giving an opinion or any advice.

It depends on the insert.  Some older inserts used the 61 drill bit but most now use the 31 (1 size bigger).  Chances are he is using the 61 drill bit and then forcing the inserts into the holes.  If he is doing that, you can have the same size inserts but have a much tighter feel.

Some bits just drill a little tighter.

We also noticed different brands of inserts would feel larger/smaller.

Are you using the same brand of insert?

I would remove the insert and see if it feels large enough outside the ball.
If so then it is probably just the hole a little tight. You can work out the hole some and then glue it back in (or you can have them do this).

My shop uses Vise inserts and all sizes from 9/16 to 25/32 (I think) use a 31/32" drill bit then the bigger sizes use a 1 1/32" bit.  The grips should all be the same outside diameter. All I do after I drill for grips is buzz the hole quick with my bevel sander then install.  I always allow the customer to try the grips before I glue them in.  I do agree if your bit is dull, then the hole will be smaller and thus tighter...but I know when my bit gets dull...its hard to drill and then I get them sharpened.

Just my 2 cents.

31/32 for standard grips...  these could be large for "vaccu-grips", or smaller for the lady's or smaller sized grips, but that's the standard.  Otherwise, they should be fit to the specific size of the person's fingers.

It seems to me that Tenth Frames run smaller in size over Vise.  You'd think 23/32 is 23/32 but that isn't the case.

I've run into the same thing going from vise to turbo.  If a customer of mine had vise I have to go a 1/2 large with turbo for the same fit.
