I think I read somewhere that your waist bend should be no more than 15 degrees from vertical. I too, have the same problem and need to bend my knees more. The "sitting down" trick works, as does the knee flex during your approach stance, prior to moving your first step. You certainly can tell what you are bending from the ball reaction/path!

I am terrible with this.  I am working at it everyday, but I know alot of it has to do with all the work done on my knees.

I don't really play cards and I am not 79, but it fits together somehow.

Jeff - Text book is 10-15 degrees bend of the waist but there are exceptions to every rule.
Best way to tell if you are bending your waist too much in set up is if you feel the weight of your body on the balls of your feet.
If you do you are leaning too far forward.
If you get too far forwrd (something that also happens if you start to bend at the waist later in the approach) you get too much weight forward which will pull your body forward faster making your feet too fast.

Ball gets late to the line and you either miss wide right if your game is big open shoulder to swing the ball or you will tug the ball to catch your arm swing up to your feet.

Plus excellent point by Rags about center of gravity. You get weight forward like that it is harder to remain balanced and throw a good shot when your timing is not good if your CG is out of whack.

When you go for the knee bend just remember do not get your knee out any farther than over the toes of your slide foot. You go farther and you take the chance of hurting your slide knee.

I know that I just have trouble with this because I'm too darn fat.

I need to do more squats, but don't have a squat rack to work on & I've got a disconcerting clicking in my kneee whne I try to do deep knee bends as a workout.

Bjaardker - Ouch ! There are exceptions to every rule.
If you do have a knee or both knee problems then you can only bend as far as physically possible without hurting yourself.
Any knee bend you can get is better than none at all for leverage and improved balance.

Dicnic - great point about setting up with knee bend. It helps your balance taking the 1st step to start off a little lower in the set up.

Spweener - Terriffic point about checking the line of chest to knee to slide foot at the line. As long as you are checking that might as well check to see if you are sliding on the sam board you started on or drifting the same amount of boards in your approach each 1st ball.
