For me it was the Ebonite Thunderbolt. Those glory days.(to much Bourbon) This is beginning to sound like Al Bundy and "Polk High"

I agree about the proving the negative bad show on my part.

Purple Urethane beast will out...

No worries. I just find myself in these discussions enough around the bowling center that I have to ask for verification.

For instance, on two separate occasions, I've had conversations with people who swore the both the burgundy Hammer and the gold Angle were reactive -- I'm assuming because the balls hooked so much for them that they just assumed such. Me and the pro shop guy one night almost got invited to the parking lot over the burgundy Hammer incident from a guy who would not believe it wasn't a reactive ball.

There's also the misconception that the Ebonite Optyx Formula One ball isn't reactive because it has a clear shell. And I'd wager at least a quarter of the people I know who throw Hammer don't know it's no longer a Faball company.

Never had a Beast. Won't get into that argument.

Only had 2 non-reactive resin balls ... the AMF Black Angle, and a plastic Galaxie 300 that I used as a youth. Both were good balls, but nothing performance-wise compared to the modern coverstocks of the balls of the early 90's onward.

OK, finally got the Beast ads scanned in. You can see the slight difference in logo between the two.

Excellent work.

Glad to see you have those ads, which prove what many of us remember:

The original Beast was urethane.

Geez all this debate on the Columbia Beast. Wished I was asked sooner coming from the old days. There were 2 purple Beast before all the other Beast were released. Like many have said the first was urethane (which I believe had a dull finished) then the resin "The Beast" was released. It also was purple in color but if I remember correctly had a little shine to it. I had the Bonanza X (blem) of the Beast and it was my best money ball ever.

Back to the topic...
Blue Hammer
Red Pearl Hammer
Nail

Hammer guy back then

I thought Reactive Resin was used since the begining of bowling?

What is urethane? I have never heard of it.

That's a good find there. Seems we have our answer. See if you can find a way to send that to Bowling Ball Reviews and the USBC so they can update their records.
