Best Urethane Pieces
« on: September 19, 2015, 09:16:07 AM »
Before I give some insight, I prefer not to buy a Pitch Black, but I am not against it. Looking at some other options in the market. I am also aware of the Black Hammer Urethane coming out in mid-October. I also have a Ride 1 7-8 from my PAP and I do not want another reactive with this layout. I want the true "weaker reactive" cover (urethane) so I can take the surface down between 360 and 1000 depending on my needs.

I'm looking at my best options for urethane. Being that I have a higher rev rate, I can definitely modify the hook potential and backend that I get from any ball if necessary. I do have the original Burgundy Hammer, but there are a few things that I want to get away from with that ball at this time. I've never had a urethane drilled for my game, but I'm going to work with my PSO on the layout. More than likely, I will still ask him about the ball I am considering, but I wanted to get some feedback from others as well. If I am correct, the urethane market consist of the following: Pitch Black, Booyah, Blue Hammer, Rebel Tank, Artic Sniper,Super Natural (kinda), Mix, and Burning Up (which I refuse to buy at that price.) You can also add some of the discontinued modern urethanes (Karma Urethane, U2 Classic, Natural, Natural Pearl, etc. except the Tank and Grenade)

for ME, all of the Urethane copies or remakes over the past several years are considered react-a-thane by many out there.
I had tried several of these pieces and every one pretty much did a hook stop
I had much better luck at the time with the Hammer taboo spare ball.
a little scuff by hand and it was golden on the dry wood lanes, shot 803 with it.

I have the new Black Hammer Urethane and its a true old school urethane shell with an updated core.
its a must for burned up patterns (heads) and lighter, shorter volumes

What did urethane do before? And how would a Track Spare+ work on a short pattern at 500?

I've had the new blue and the new burgundy hammer. The blue is no where near as good as the pitch black, both balls drilled same and surface.

The burgundy is stronger than the pitch black same drilling and surface by about 4-5 boards.
PB is 2-3 boards stronger than the blue, the biggest difference is the hit of the PB. It hits harder than both hammers, I carry a lot of off hits that I did not with the hammers. Just my observation.

Hank Boomershine told me the Pitch Black has the same cover as the
Columbia Black U Dot at Bowl Expo this past June.

OK, which black u-dot is/was he referring to?

Many people don't know this, but there were two versions of black u-dot.

NO, I am not talking about the BUD II. Or the U2.

The white label ball with white engraving was pure urethane.  Then, later, there was a green label ball with green engraving that was flexel. They were both available for a short time.

You could polish the green label version to a very shiny finish, and it would skid/flip like crazy.

The green U-Dot was marketed as reactive.  No surprises there.

I still have a Bud II, and thanks to AMF and their bowling alley, it's the only thing I can get a consistent read on where I bowl, but I digress.

I'm curious to see if the new black Hammer is a "true" urethane ball as they claim.

I am still holding out hope that they finally re-do a version of the pink.  I would think there would be a market for a high hardness pure urethane model at least on a limited release.

Since the black is supposedly the first true 90's era urethane coverstock to be redone, it will be interesting to see how it performs with the new core.  And more importantly, how it sells at the price point they are selling it at.
