Boards

How do you count boards.  Please break it down for a slow learner. All I know is the center dot or 1 to the right or left of center etc. What the heck is the 14 board or 25 board. I consider myself a decent bowler, but I have never figured out the lingo of this sport...Thanks

39 boards across the lane......from gutter to the first arrow is

1,2,3,4,5(arrow)6,7,8,9,10(arrow)...center dot is 20

That intro makes it seem like you do not see the boards that make up the lane (wood lanes) or the lane appearance (synthetics lanes).

Since I am right handed, I count boards from the right; there are generally (but not always) 39 boards, just over 1" wide. The board #1 is the first board next to the gutter. The 1st arrow is the 5th board, 2nd arrow = 10th board, 3rd arrow = 15th board. 4th arrow or center arrow is the 20th board. Right handers still continue counting upwards. 25th board is the 5th arrow for right handers, but for left handers, that arrow is the 3rd arrow and the 15th board, counting from the left gutter.

One will occasionally run across lanes with 40 and 41 boards. Fairly rare these days.
