Bob Hanson (and other long time bowlers)

This question is directed to Bob Hanson but others with enough experience can reply.

You have mentioned in other post that you feel you are a better bowler today from a knowledge point of view although you don’t feel that you physically throw the ball as good today as you did 5 years ago.

My question is what have you learned that would applicable to the game as it was 20 or 30 years ago?

Knowledge of ball cores and ball surfaces would largely be lost as there wasn’t any two piece balls with dynamic cores and balls primarily were made of rubber or plastic.

Knowledge of different lane surfaces would largely be negated from the fact almost all used wood at that time.

I know you said you have learned to use your legs in gaining ball speed and that could have been helpful back then.

What other knowledge to you feel you could transfer back that would make a difference in that time frame?

3 things for sure

1-spare shooting(i beleive hasnt changed much, if any)
2-synthetics
wood lanes are good for about 30 years, in our area(detroit) most are switching over to synthetics, which we didnt see many 10 years ago.
3-Oiling machines
It use to be-"when was the strip day" and the shot varied depending when was the last day strippped. With the new machines, most houses strip everyday as they oil.

Dont swing it-if you cant bring it

When in doubt-swing it out

Yes, I've learned a lot over the years about BOWLING BALLS .. never knew they were different .. always thought there were different manufacturers but that the balls were the same! Still know NOTHING compared to many people on this site!

The one thing that stands out in my mind is CONCENTRATION. I don't think I ever thought about where I was going to throw the ball when I was younger .. looked at the pin and threw right at it .. now I watch where the ball is going and attempt to allow for the BREAK POINT ..I do make a heck more spares.

Last night was an eye opener for me. The lanes had a BIG BACK-END. I found where I had to throw the ball .. but I couldn't keep the speed up .. moving left .. continually left 10's or 5's .. REALIZED why PRO bowlers reaching OLDER ages have to get out of the MAIN COMPETITION!

The answer I have for you is CONCENTRATION .. taking the time to get the ball where you want it to be (strike and spare shooting).
