Bong Coo blasts Purvis Granger after Asian Bowling Tour Win...
« on: February 05, 2004, 09:46:48 AM »
In the past few years, some of us know that Purvis Granger, a former PBA Champion and professional, has moved out to the Philippines and is hired by the Philippine Government to coach the Philippine National Bowling Team. He gets paid about $2,000 for his title as the coach monthly, and also does lessons at a different bowling center in Metro Manila. Not a terrible way to make a living considering that your dollar is multiplied by 56 there and he is a Storm Staffer.

Granger is an American Citizen, and is in Manila on some kind of visa- possibly a working visa since his title is "coach". As some of us know, the Asian Bowling Tour wrapped up their year with their version of the PBA World Championships with their closing tournament in Singapore. Later on, Purvis Granger won the championship wearing the colors of the Philippines. Bong Coo, a women's bowling hero in the Philippines, blasted Granger and the Philippine Bowling Congress for allowing an American citizen to participate as a "Filipino" in the ABT Tournaments.

I stand in the middle in this kind of situation. What are your views on this? I was just curious.

Also, for those who didn't know, Lou Marquez, a former coach of the Kegel Training Center, is the coach of the Hong Kong national Bowling Team now. I saw him at a few telecasts on TV when I was in Asia, and wish him the best of luck there.

She didn't yell when they took his entry fee money; only when he won. Sounds more like sour grapes to me. That happens a lot with "children".

I don't know if Purvis is in Las Vegas with the team, but I do know taht Del Rosario and Biboy (for sure) have made the cut at the Mini-Eliminator as a 205 and under average. They are on national teams. How did that happen?

I know that lanes are tougher in Asia and can understand Lisa being under 205.  Biboy could be questionable as to be under 205.  You have to add 10-20 pin to get an average simuliar to house average in the US.

Purvis is in Las Vegas.  Saw his name on the High Roller website.

That tournament only has a requirement that you be a resident in Asia.  Purvis was not representing the Philippines in an recognized international event like the world championships.

If Purvis bowled the ABC in Reno and wore a bowling shirt with Philippines on it, would he be representing the country Philippines?  I think not.  It just show were he is from.  At this time, he is from the Philippines.

I asked about Purvis winning the Philipine Nationals last year in this board too. I can understand him participating like Tim Mack in International tournaments in Asia but not the Country's Nationals.

Good for Bong Coo. Bowled against her in '69 FIQ in Kuala Lumpur when she represented Philipines and me for Malaysia. Glad to hear she's still into bowling.

to coach one national team and bowl for another would be a conflict of interest.

he has no choice but to bowl for the nation that he coaches or don't bowl.

John Fantini is coaching in Saudi Arabia, Mat Kalsom (sp) is coaching in Malaysia. You do not see them taking part in the coutry's nationals.

Would love to see them dress up in the country's national dressing receiving awards after winning a national event.

Baiki - how are you long time no hear...  sorry to say Bong Coo is not into bowling .. she is into politics...

Ok guys... there's a bit of behind thes scenes here...

1) As knight stated... Bong coo is running for senator... and to me this is an obvious ploy for publicity... that doesn't mean she is wrong tho.... but I kind of disgreee with her..

2) I feel it all depends on the tournament's entry rules... so..

3) In case of international events wherein its country vs country then i don't think purvis would play for the RP.

4) A lot of bickering/complaints by some people... but the PHil gov't has given very little to no support to the sport of bowling here... Johnson Cheng has spend alot of his own money to help the sport.. I'm not sure but I think Paeng Nepomuceno's father had to sell country club shares to finance the trip to argentina (NOt sure) for the world cup... my point... stop complaining, you haven't earned the right yet.. no laws have been violated..

5)Jeremy - lanes are more challenging here in Asia... and as Wilbert noted... there is usually a 10-20 pin difference in ave... we usually have more oil... and backends are not that strong... Hence my wonderment at the Roto-grip thread of using pearls for heavy oil

6) Wilbert - how are you man... re biboy... he started shooting good only relatively recently... so that could be the reason...

7) Charlest - the child you are referring to is a grandmother already I think...

Wells that about it...

jeremy,

these are to my best knowledge.

purvis was hired by the phil. bowling congress to train the national team. if he's lucky, he gets paid, by the phil. sports commission, $1500 plus boarding allowance.  if you ever see purvis doing lessons at different centers,  he is working with either a national team, kegel or bowlmart player, which he doesn't charge fees.

purvis was not the first "non-local" to play in the abt.  tom hahl, who is residing in singapore, was the first.  since purvis is residing in the phils, he is stipulated by the tournament to wear a shirt with "philippines" on the back. purvis won the abt grand slam twice.  if there was a problem/protest, it should have been addressed when he first joined a leg.
