Title: Bowling Ball Concept
Post by: AlonzoHarris on March 12, 2018, 07:41:32 AM
Had a thought come to me. Quite confident manufactures facilities are not properly equipped to full fill this but follow me here as Storm/RG as the example.

Ordering sheet:
1. Choose Weight

2. Choose Coverstock
 - R2S Solid
 - R2S Pearl
 - R2S Hybrid
 - R3S...
 - Etc...

3. Choose Weightblock
 - Inverted Fe2
 - Centripetal
 - Etc....

4. Choose Colors (3 Max)

5. Choose Name & Font

6. Choose Logo

Essentially you get to build-a-bear your bowling ball. They could grey out certain options based on other choices as well if they feel like the combination would give a bad look for the company in ball names or cover/core combos.

Excellent marketing idea. No clue how many hundred dollars it would cost for profits to be correct for Utah.

As far logo it should have to be the logo for the core.

It's the inverted fe2 then it gets a hyroad. And becomes r2X solid hyroad or NRG Pearl hyroad. That way there are zero problems with logos or names.

Lock core would be a lock logo etc.

Picking colors or logo colors would be plenty.

I would order em this way without na doubt unless they're $500 or something...I know what I want!!!

hammer and ebonite has already done this. all the bowlersmart releases, vibe XRs, cyclone GB etc. i believe the requirement was for a complete batch of 500 or so which was $5000 or something along those lines.

This would be awesome.

However, reality sucks:

1. Price per ball would be insane.
2. How would USBC approval work?  Let's all just agree that it wouldn't...

Agreed - logo matches choices.

I feel like USBC approval should't be an issue. If the core and cover are approved - the combinations of them shouldn't alter that approval. Color choices shouldn't matter either.

First off, bowlers as a whole are too cheap for this to work.  Second, there is no way for it to work around the current USBC approval process.

Covers and cores by themselves are not approved by themselves - it is the ball as a whole that is tested and subject to the approval process.  You are not considering the fact that the USBC would have to completely overhaul their testing and approval process.  No small task....

I may need a more in depth understanding of what the USBC considers during it's testing and how it goes about it. I also wonder if the cores and covers are not approved by themselves because they honestly just haven't implemented a way of testing them individually.

Please note this concept is in good fun. Not looking to implement this or even have the means to bring this concept to life.

I know, I'm just being a total killjoy.  I think the idea has merit but given the money and politics of the bowling industry, it just can't happen as it's currently constructed.

However, I'll play along.  I would like to see as many covers as possible wrapped around the Roto Nucleus core and the Storm NOS core.  Because, why not?

Great idea but there's minimum order/runs for a reason.

Set up process and everything else needed to make a run of balls along with the small percentage of seconds make this very costly.  Not to mention stopping production of other products to make a bunch or a few randoms would be a nightmare.

Cool idea but very likely more trouble then it's worth.  Brunswick at one time had this information posted.  It was a minimum run of 800 and a minimum of 80 I believe for any ball weight chosen.

Honestly nothing unexpected listed. Can't say I was really taken back by any of the tests.

What would be kinda lame is if you design a ball and it's submitted, then rejected, it has to have a name and/or significant color change for re-submission.

Totally get it. Production nightmare.

Would require new machinery that has the ability to adapt quickly to new input. Something that in a sense works like the touch screen soda machines Coke or whomever put out. More advance to where orders are uploaded into the machine from a management system. The machine then would pull from the pre-loaded materials - changing for each order. You could even set it to queue up orders for a set amount of hours, organize them by similar core or coverstock and then send them through the process. Just rambling at this point but if the industry had the money of the NFL this could be done haha.

Haha all good! Sometimes fun to play devils advocate.

I would definitely throw an order in for a Nucleus core and NOS core option.

I'll take the R2X Pearl on the Defiant core, please and thank you.

Maybe not for everyone, but probably so for Storm, Ebonite and Brunswick. Some of the smaller companies might be able to pull it off.

Several years ago when the REAL Lane Masters was still in business, it was pretty easy to make just one ball that was a different color and/or cover/core on their production line. But then they didn't have an automated production line, those balls actually were made "by hand". Not quite one at a time, but each ball was made individually.

The difference in per unit cost for the LM facility would have been drastically less than for the big companies.

If Brunswick could use the Brute logo  which occasionally ended up on a ball rack upside down, you can use that logo.

Hmmm, that's an idea - the HOURGLASS FIGURE core!!! I'm surprised that Banger Bowling didn't already come out with this.

Yeah lol.  Legends/Lane Masters has been on my radar due to my love of 2 piece bowling balls (which majority of their line up is) but just never pulled the trigger on any of their stuff.  Got some unique interesting pieces for sure.
