Can you have gripping holes for both hands?
« on: November 25, 2016, 01:41:25 AM »
I am a right handed Full Roller and have two older balls with no core.
An AMF Angle Plus and a 1970's Japanese rubber ball.
Both balls have a special high flare layout that uses a balance hole.
The balance hole is on the left lower side of the ball.
When I support the ball in my left hand the balance hole is naturally under my left support hand thumb.
I find it very comfortable to insert my support hand's thumb into the balance hole during the push away and release the thumb at the top of the push away.
Is this illegal?

Also is it illegal for a two handed bowler to have gripping holes for both his hands?
You would think some two handed players might want gripping holes for both hands.

You're actually allowed 11. 10 max if you're using them.for gripping, and a balance hole. But you must be using the first 10 to actively grip at some point.

See chapter 8 of the USBC Playing Rules

6. Holes.
a. Holes or indentations for gripping purposes shall not exceed  five and shall be limited to one for
each  finger and one for the thumb, all for the same hand. The player is not required to use all  finger holes in any speci c deliver y, but they must be able to demonstrate, with the same hand, that each gripping hole can be simultaneously used for gripping purposes. Any thumb hole that is not used for gripping purposes during the delivery would be classi ed as a balance hole.
b. One hole for balance purposes, not to exceed 11⁄4 inch in diameter is permitted. (Slugs and bowling tape will be allowed in balance holes, however interchangeable devices are
not allowed).
1) Any hole that cannot be reasonably shown to be used with a single hand is classi ed as a balance hole.
2) Balance holes may not intersect gripping holes.
c. One vent hole for each  nger and/or thumb hole, not to exceed 1⁄4 inch in diameter is permitted.
d. One mill hole for inspection purposes not to exceed 5 ⁄8 inch in diameter and 1⁄8 inch in depth
is permitted.

So from what you all said, it seems like I could have a max of 5 gripping holes for the right hand and 5 gripping holes for the left hand if I wanted.

10 gripping holes total.

So I guess it is legal to have 3 gripping holes for the right hand and 1 gripping hole for the left hand.

So I am good?

itsallaboutme,

So you are saying it is against the rules to have gripping holes for both hands?
If you hold the ball with both hands you are not allowed to use gripping holes for both hands?
You can only have gripping holes for the hand that is last holding the ball at the moment of release?
:o

Read the rule that I posted or go to bowl.com and look up the complete rule.

The rule doesn't say anything about the holes being for the hand holding the ball last.  Read what it says, not what you think it says.
