why do bowlers complain about lines?
« on: November 23, 2016, 12:01:52 PM »
I never really understood why bowlers get upset about other bowlers playing the same line. I hear these comments once in awhile... "get your own line!" or "ass is playing my line."

Why do bowlers complain about other bowlers rolling the same line? there are only 39 boards to play with, there are so many similar styles or rolls, and a plethora of equipment being used... and the pocket doesn't move....

Darreyl,
I should have corrected my "perceived" stance about one person playing with urethane. That is not going to radically change the transition phase of any pair with 3-5 players per lane. 3-4 urethanes will create carrydown; but they will do more harm more rapidly to their line than they will do to that of people using resin, which usually will handle carrydown better than urethane

 Jeff,

No big deal, and the post was not a shot at you, but more using your example to demonstrate that there is a myriad amount of ways to attack a ths, and for some of us, urethane out near the dry line is the way to go.

Also to make the point about what people call "screwing up" the shot.

Should I complain about all the people using reactives and drying out the lanes and changing the shot way too fast, there would be a hue and cry such as you can't imagine, yet the people using the reactives cry about me "smearing oil everywhere" with my urethanes.

I do see carrydown though. I usually start with an old red pearl hammer, switch to a lane shined black hammer, then on to a 1000grit nitro as the night goes on, all while watching them absolutely burn up the middles and chase it to the left gutter. By the third game they are playing 25 as a target, while I'm still playing 7/8/9.

I'm not sure if I don;t have enough hand or our oil patterns don't usually permit a good reaction with urethanes. I've tried more than a few and either the oil pattern is pretty finicky or the carrydown soon requires a stronger ball. (Could have drilled them wrong also??) My best urethane ball reaction was with the Seismic Desperado, the original. Unfortunately it's a 15 lb. and I now use 14s. That was a great ball. period. Plastic, urethane or resin, nomatter

Oddly, I practiced last Friday morning in one of my houses and the lanes were so dry that I was able to use my T-Zone to play an angle that I usually use for my strike ball; yet, it had good reaction and good hitting power, which I rarely get with plastic or urethane.

There is no question that transitions come qucker and are more difficult to deal with in the modern resin era.  However guys who want to hook the lane to the max create much bigger problems for themselves and everyone else than too many guys playing the sane line.

Just because the balls and lane pattern allows you to go coast to coast doesnt mean  that is the best way to play

What morons do you play against/with? :P
Anyone who say such comments should gtfo.
Of course there will be people who use the same line as you! Most people will use the line that goes over the second mark, or 5-15 board line.

If you complain when others use the same line, you suck as a bowler!

I don't bowl with any of them currently, I just heard this during a tourney earlier this year and some a couple of months ago. I used to bowl with guys in the same league who complained about people on their line. Even when I jumped on that wagon years ago, I questioned it, but at the time I was a "newbie" in this modern era and believed almost every thing experienced high average bowlers say.

I have been in this game for 55 years and scratch bowlers complaining about lane conditions goes back at least that far.

If I ever come across some bowlers who complain that I use the same line, I will turn around and laugh so much at them.

Anyone with half a brain should realize that they are better off with other guys playing their line.  The shot is going to transition no matter what and the transitions are a lot easier if you dont have guys playing all over the place.

Well I guess if you have a full brain, it makes sense not to want people playing the same line.

If I'm playing the right line, everyone playing a different line would be playing the wrong line.

In my case, I use urethane, and play much wider than the crowd using resin.

Since I'm so far from the heavy oil, my ball doesn't pick up much oil to streak down the lane, and the shot out there doesn't change during the night since there wasn't much out out there to begin with.
