What if Traber lost weight?
« on: February 25, 2007, 03:09:45 PM »
Not to rip on the guy at all: don't get any bad impressions.  I'm just wondering if his balance, and therefore his game, might improve if he were to lose weight.  What's your opinion on this issue?

If he lost weight, he would suddenly become 100000000x better at representing the PBA, than he was yesterday.  His current physical condition is an imberassment not only the PBA, but to himself.

C)...no style points in bowling....hmmmm...  As a fella lucky enough to bowl with the great Hall of famer Dave Davis who seemed to rack up a passal of major titles in comparision to his total titles.  I believed it was his belief that his great form....great natural free speed, a long flat spot, great balance and leverage at the line(ball close to ankle) and perfectly positioned slide foot at the foul line.  Was his trump card...His ace in the hole so to speak...that allowed him on tougher tournament conditions to take the lane out of the equation in comparison to other bowlers and allowed him to really perform well on these types of shots.  (this continued into his late 50s until the senior tour of the time disappeared).

It was during this association that I was able to absorb a couple of these principles and put them to work to exceed what others thought possible and to meet all my expectations for a very brief period of time.  I am no longer that bowler or that fit individual with form I enjoyed feeling and seeing on tape!
BUT for a brief space of time.

Note...Dave spent 45 minutes at the beginning of EACH practice session since 1957 working only on form and almost not watching the pins fall.  I think that he would say there ARE style points in bowling to certain extent!

LL, I'm trying to over you head because my "style points" comment went right over it. I meant style points like diving or ice skating. You're not scored on you execute the shot from everything behind the foul line. It only matter that you are timed correctly to hit the pins optimally. No one says Roger Clemens was better than Nolan Ryan because his leg kick was lower.....

Parker Bohn would have 80+ plus titles by now if style amounted to scores and Walter Ray would be flat busted.

Losing weight at his size might be better, but it's not going to come without a price to his bowling.

A man that size does in fact have a style that's adapted to fit the girth he's got.  You slim someone that size down to a more managable weight, things are going to be over.  For years his armswing has been used to going around his sides.  With it no longer there, it's a new armswing to learn.  Timing will be off as well.

Have I done that type of weight loss?  No, but a friend I've bowled with for the last 7 years has.  Jkiser01 knows him as well.  I remember the first night he came back from his surgery.  Didn't practice all summer and went from 400lbs down to 270 (at that time).  First 5 shots were in the gutter.  All of a sudden, he didn't have to bring his arm around his sides.

Personally, it's ok to make a comment on his physique or whatever you want.  Just be prepared for retaliation all depending on how you attack.

this whole topic is kind of funny...i missed some of the show because i couldnt stay out of the fridge, im around 150, i was trying to add on some lbs so i can throw it like traber...all joking aside, it isnt healthy for him to weigh that much and i do think he would be a slightly better bowler at less weight, but if hes happy im happy, i can choose not to watch him bowl if i dont like it...

I was 293 pounds about a 1&1/2 years ago. I got down to 258lbs, and boy can I tell you did that mess up my bowling game. My knee bend was inconsistant, my timing was WAY off, and suddenly my armswing was out of kilter. Although it was good for my health, my bowling game went to hell.

Think about the level these guys are competing at. Mike Machuga was on a roll last year, he has a pulled groin, and suddenly he doesn't even break the top 50 in points for the 1st half. I'm sure he was walking around just fine, but a little pinch causes his foot to drift left slightly & suddenly he's at the bottom of the pack.

Would it be good for him to lose weight? Yes. Would it be hell on his game? Yes.

Parker Bohn...a Dave Davis friend, student, and disciple I understand.

30 titles is not bad.  Dave had 20 on regular tour and a bunch of majors...both regular and senior.

conspirator....when did style points count in bowling.  This ain't ice skating.  He doesn't have the prettiest style, but 35 regional titles sure means something.  Just because he doesn't have to move himself all around during the course of a game doesn't mean he's not good....he seems to do just fine.  Look at Walter Ray....his style isn't something you'd want many up and coming bowlers to emmulate, but look at the success he's had.

Doesn't matter that you have better form than he does....when you get out on the tour and win a few titles, then you let us know....and you're argument still won't be valid.

Cons,

You show your age with your statements in a negative fashion way too much. Have you ever bowled against Dale? How many times have you watched him bowl at all? To make statements like, he is not that versatile or not that good, is foolish. I don't like his physical form as I believe it is of bad promotion to the idea of what a bowler is, pro or not. Is that a sad statement, yes it is, but anything that sheds a negative light on the tour, which I believe is still very fragile I'm against. Actually Mike Mineman's form measured by textbook standards is much more flawed. Watch his slide footwork or short muscled down swing. Peoples levels of greatness can't be measured by versatility alone as you can have all kinds of tools but never win. Winning is the name of the game and its based upon score not style.
35 regional titles - an eagele - numerous amateur wins - yah he just down right sucks, my bad!!

Yes he has won alot in regionals.. but he throws the ball absolutely terrible!!

From watching your videos, I was going to tell you to lose some weight too. But then I decided that you would "still suck", so what would be the point?

Instead of spending your time sitting in a chair making fun of professional bowlers, go out and try to crowbar your elbow out of the 90 degree angle it's in at your release. While you're at it, google "follow through" and "cutting down on loft".

Bashing pros when your form is what it is? Good try, better luck next time.

P.S. I was very impressed by the "POWER!!!" on your "Drilled Label" White Dot. I guess I'll have to try that drilling on my next one.

I watched all of those posted videos, and not one shot in them is better than a Traber shot.  As grotesquely overweight as Traber is, he makes the people in those videos look like amateurs (coincidence?  I think not).  You can make fun of the whale the Traber is, but saying your shot is anywhere near as good as his is preposterous. The guy in the videos flipping out bad shots into a wall isn't very impressive at all, and most certainly throws a worse ball than Traber.  But that is just my opinion.... what do I know anyways.

Why can't someone be critical of a professional athlete? I rag on baseball, football, and basketball players all the time for various things about them or their game I don't like.

Just because I think Russ Ortiz or Jeff Weaver are suspect pitchers in the majors doesn't mean I can beat them. Fans critique sports players, we like some for certain reasons and don't like others for other reasons.

Dale Trabor may be a nice guy and he obviously has succeeded in bowling. For that he should be credited, but there are those people out there who hate watching him bowl. There is nothing wrong with saying you can't stand the way he throws the ball or the way he looks doing it. You can hate watching the guy while knowing he probably would beat you 9 times out of 10....just because a guy is better than me doesn't mean I have any interest in him or his game.

Personally, I root against him because I don't want to watch him bowl. I don't need to watch Robert Smith or anyone like that, but there isn't a bowler on tour I'd choose Trabor over...and the dude is getting bigger and bigger, I'm sure Rome will use Dale Trabor as his poster boy of bowling.

It's why Nascar (which I don't like racing by the way) got rid of Jimmy Spencer...he was a fat guy with bad teeth. It's all about image unfortunately.

Edited on 2/26/2007 10:04 AM

Couple of things here...

One, if Jimmy Spencer was unmarketable, how did he go straight to TV -- where he could show off his fat and bad teeth -- immediately after getting dropped from his ride? What killed Jimmy Spencer was that he was pushing 50, never learned to control his on-track temper, got involved in a highly publicized scrape with some local cops who were trying to arrest his teenage son and was never that good to begin with. It was all about performance with Spencer. He's currently co-hosting NASCAR programs all over Speed Channel.

The other thing -- this statement "There's nothing wrong with saying xxxxxx..." That's a popular saying these days, that what we say can't be wrong because we said it. Reality is, however, that it's rude (and sinful, for those who are of faith) to judge another person because of their appearance. So yes, it's wrong to be judgmental for that reason.

Is anyone 100% sure he doesn't have a giant hernia....I am serious too.  It is not common for someone to have that large of a belly shaped like that.  beans

Anyways.........Dale Traber is one hell of a bowler. I am sure everyone on here would agree if you only saw his scores every week and not him doing it.  Just my 2 cents.........35 Regional titles.  3rd all time

Ugly as sin dipped in misery but that is some bowling guys!!!!

What get's me is that I can't bowl six or seven games without my knee hurting, he outweighs me by a good 120 lbs. and he's fine.  I must be doing something wrong.

He needs to lose weight if nothing more than for health reasons. As far as style goes, remember the closest distance between to points is a straight line!

I think you mean the "shortest" distance...

But if you remember correctly, Dale Traber used to be skinnier and threw the ball exactly the same. I'm not sure which tournament it was but it was on ESPN Classic a little while ago. Sometime in 96? Dale and Dave Traber bowled in the title match against each other and BOTH were about half the size that they are now.
