Bowling @ Your Center
« on: June 24, 2013, 12:08:16 PM »
Most of us bowl @ the same center year after year and was wondering why .......

I will admit my center isn't the best in the metroplex and I could make a case to say its the hardest place to bowl because they dont know how to run the lanes and the pinsetters are also off, and the lanes break down. The reason I bowl @ my center is because of the people and nothing else..  Season after season they normally stack the teams but that doesnt mean they win each time... Something about that family evironment you cant replace.....

I bowl at the centers I do every year b/c they are good leagues and different challenges.

My Wednesday night league is a little more individually oriented, on synthetic lanes and overall a good league as far as talent etc.  This team is a core group of 3 of us that have bowled together for 5 years, this upcoming season being our 6th.

My Thursday night league is a little more team oriented, on old wood lanes and a bigger league in a bigger house (a bit less overall talent).  My team is essentially my family and while we are always in the hunt to win, this league is about us all spending time together.

Both are good leagues and that's why I'll continue bowling in those houses.

My center lost all it leagues to a new center, but I still go there because they run some damn good bargains to keep people coming in. I also stay there because they actually put down some oil and its a more difficult shot than the other place.

Its run down as far as the building goes, but they keep the lanes and pinsetters in good shape. I know alot of bowlers aren't thrilled with the new lanes ( because they got lied to about it being brand new, and found out it was used from another house) but because they talked so much crap about the old place they can't swallow their pride and come back.

I find it funny, I've been out of the game for 3 years now and the center I bowled at for 9 or 10 of my 20 years of bowling just closed at the beginning of the month. The bowlers all talked trash about the house I grew up at for the first 10 or 11 years of bowling, and now they're all bowling there.

I was at that house, which is and always will be my home away from home, Thursday night to hang out with a friend who was bowling league. I couldn't help but laugh at all the people who talked trash now giving their money to that center because they have no choice.

I bowl at the same center because majority of the bowlers/people there are not "ghetto" (not by color, but by character/attitude) like many of the bowling alleys in the area. There are more respectful people at the center I bowl at. Few big headed bowlers and less whining ones too. Less fights, less flying bowling balls, and good friendly staff. The leagues are not that great, but the bowlers are much more civilized. lol

And potlucks are great too! :D

Ive moved around some. Many centers have closed so that means longer drives if you decide you want to change centers. Most like what is closest and convenient. We got a new center back in 2001 that was long awaited because the other centers (4,owned by the same person) were being ran into the ground.( only 1 remains of those now owned by a different person)

Unfortunately this new center had its problems as well. It started at the top with owner/management and quickly trickled down. I refuse to bowl league there now. I have a choice in who gets my hard earned money and they no longer will. I occasionally practice there and shoot many videos there because they open early. Every time I go the price of the games is different even though the time of day is always the same. Just depends on who is working.

When you place powder on approaches for years then switch to buffing with furniture polish what hope is there of trying to bowl consistently and safely for that matter. So I took my 10 minute drive each way to a 30 minute drive each way in pursuit of better. This season I will go a different direction at another newer house that is around 20mins each way.

Who you bowl with, against, and the environment are all very important factors.

We have five centers where i live. One is 40 lanes 2 are 22 and 2-16.  I bowl at one of the 16 lane centers. The owner apprieciates his bowlers, puts out a consistent shot (not easy) week to week. Everybody gets along. I"ve been bowling there for a long time.

I actually have a Center not 2 minutes from my house, but the last time I went the ball return cut one of my balls damn near to the core and they refused to do anything about it so I've never been back. Since then I drive 30 minutes to the one I've now been bowling at for years.

Luckily there are lots of town and good centers within 30 minutes drive I need to go check out.

Going on vacation this week, will be Bowling in my wifes area in Ashland Kentucky.

I live less than 5 minutes from where I bowl, I bowl there due to convenience and it is the newest center in my home area with the exception of one but it is on the opposite side of town (about 30 minutes from home).  It has been open now for 10 years and resides on the second floor of the Santa Ana Star Casino in Central New Mexico.

I've been spoiled. VERY spoiled, and lucky.

I've been lucky that everywhere I've lived, there have been at least 10 - 15 centers near me or within 20 minute's drive., so I've been spoiled by many a different surface, shot and competition, which keeps me on my toes each time, and this is despite some closing and some opening. I mean, going from a town which at the time, there were only 2 synthetic centers (one being the AFB) and the rest wood, to a town where there was only 1 wood center, to a mix of wood and synthetic again (though the wood centers are slowly switching).. keeps you definitely on your toes, plus brings back memories on how to roll with the adjustments.

The only drawback the centers in my town now have is that with the exception of 2, the machinery is so old and antiquated, you worry about what condition your gear will come back in.

Prime example. One house is a 50 lane house. Synthetic lanes, but 1970s Brunswick ball returns with parts falling off, 1970s A-2 pinsetters.. literally the only thing newer than 2000 is the TVs they have in there for games. Since they are an official AMF house, they went to AMF scoring machines, but those were new in 1998.

Anyway, my story. 2 years ago, I shot my 5th 300 game with a Mission Domination. I bought it shortly before the whole Domination/$250K fiasco. 2 weeks after I bowled that 300, I threw that ball again, and it got stuck in the pit, along with the ball from the guy after me. Then we started to smell burning rubber. Mechanic didn't get to it until about 2 - 3 minutes. Balls came back, and I saw that my ball had a flat dent on the track. Literally flat. My teammate's had the same, and a good 5" chunk taken out of the track.

Of course we got new balls out of it, but after people complained for YEARS about replacing the pinsetters and ball returns, they spent $250 on the carpet, bar, speakers, and TVs for cosmic bowling on weekend nights.

Other alleys are nearly the same; automatic scorers from the mid to late 80s instead. Anything newer is an hour's drive into the Bay, or up to Reno.

But then again, I'm spoiled, because I came from Vegas, which the OLDEST house there has equipment from 1990.

But I keep going back to this place because of the bowlers. You want to bowl with the best, and they are at this one center (with the exception of the Draft league). And they are all just a bunch of great guys and gals.

There are 7 larger/notable centers near where I live.

AMF Thruway: 60 lanes (SPL) with wood approaches, AMF ball returns from the mid-90's, holds PBA/regional/local tournaments, excellent maintenance on the equipment.  They have old Brunswick AS-90 scoring machines but with new flatscreen displays).  Thruway actually puts down oil and sport shots with their brand new Kegel machine.  They also run a very good and busy pro shop.  Bowlers at other centers around here recommend the shop.  Liz Johnson and Ryan Ciminelli both have their equipment drilled here and they both practice here.  Staff is very good here.

AMF Airport: The largest house in the area with 66 lanes, still has Brunswick wood lanes/AS-90 scoring.  Upkeep isn't as good as Thruway, but it's ok.  They also put out more oil than most places.  Airport also runs a good amount of regional and local tournaments.

AMF Lancaster:36 lanes, old AMF wood lanes but has new AMF ball returns/masking units to go with the old AS-90 scoring.  I have had balls gouged out here before because the upkeep here is the worst out of the AMF centers around here.  That's why I hardly ever go there.  The shot makes you adjust though, and it is one of the harder houses to play in.  Rumor has it that this would be one of the AMF centers to possibly close as they don't draw a lot of customers.

Tonawanda Bowling Center:  42 lanes of brand new AMF HPL, new AMF ball returns and new AMF scoring machines.  This is a high quality house, similar to Thruway which is maintained very well.   They put down heavier oil (41-43 ft), and I have bowled in leagues here before.  They're cash only, but are very reasonable with pricing.  Plus, they have a good bar & grill inside the place.  The whole place was renovated in 2003, which brought a new automatic entrance and the current bar & grill, along with an expanded pro shop.  Then a few years ago brought the changes on the lanes.  Some of the league bowlers here are very arrogant and I didn't exactly like the team environment.  However, the staff and lane maintenance are excellent.  Tonawanda holds many regional/local tournaments.  In the early 90's, they hosted a weekly 1 hr bowling show called "Tops TV Challenge", which had a 3 match stepladder format.

Transit Lanes: This is a 52 lane house that has been recently renovated.  They have Brunswick scoring (installed in 2000), Brunswick Anvilane as the surface, newer ball returns, nice couches in the entire seating area. This is also the most expensive house in the area too.  In addition, the renovations in the early 2000's brought a new automatic entrance along with an expanded bar & grill that has a good menu.  Jack Jurek's pro shop is also inside this center.  Staff is good, and the lane maintenance is excellent.  They are known for putting down heavy oil and long patterns (43 ft is the standard pattern).  Also, Transit has a huge amount of leagues and they hold many regional/local tournaments.

Allie Brandt Lanes: 36 lanes of newer SPL, new AMF scoring, and AMF ball returns from the mid 90's.  This is where I bowled juniors, and it was taken over and renovated by AMF.  AMF sold this place to an independent operator a few years ago, and the staff/lane maintenance continues to be very good.  The house shot is very over/under.

Brad Angelo Lanes:  Taken over by Brad Angelo in 2012, this is where I currently bowl in leagues.  The team environment is very good here, and the staff here since Brad took over is great.  Brad has updated a lot in the 24 lane house, including renovations to the kitchen, bathrooms, and lane area.  Ball returns are mid 1990's AMF, lanes are SPL.  They put down a decent amount of oil, but have a variety of patterns during the season, including flat volume, short and long patterns.  Brad also has a variety of non-bowling activities available, including cruise nights.  The old Brunswick AS-80 scorers have got to go though.  Lane maintenance is good, but there were 4 or 5 occasions that problems with pinsetters or scoring caused teams to move to other pairs this past season.

Granted, Brad didn't have a ton of time from when he took over the place until the fall season this past year to renovate (only about 4 weeks).  However, I do think that he will be investing in this place as time goes on.  I'm glad to say he has brought in a lot of new leagues and has brought a center that was on it's last leg with an out-of-state deadbeat owner back to being very respectable.

Now, there are other centers here in the area.  However, these are the places I have spent the most time in.  My preferences for open bowling are typically AMF Thruway, Transit, Brad Angelo or Tonawanda.

You grow up bowling in the same center and befriend people that bowl at that center as well and you are bound to stick around even if it isn't the best place in the world. The more run down and homey centers are sometimes the best places to bowl. All in the eye of the beholder.

I just bowled at the Blue Ribbon Bowling Lanes in Ashland, Kentucky. The place is really nice, never stepped down to the approach though. Lane conditions were all over the place ( they had to move me because the first lane was bone dry ) but the facilities were some of the nicest I've been in. No pro shop though which just through me for a loop in a facility that nice.

I'm too old and over the hill that I don't worry about lane conditions anymore. So long as the nearest bowling alley stays somewhat clean, I'll bowl there because other houses are not real close to me.
