Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
« on: October 26, 2004, 04:08:02 AM »
How soon can you return?  I have stopped to bowl for almost three months now.  I could tell that my wrist/hand has improved but there is still a little numbness in the thumb, index and middle fingers.  My doc said it will take time for the numbness to go away and he said it is okay to bowl.  But he probably does not know how much pressure a bowler will be getting when we cup our wrist.

Should I wait until the numbness completely goes away?

Thanks

I had the carpel surgery on both hands about 4 years ago and I returned to bowling after 3 months with no problems at all.. If you are still having numbness, I don't think thats a good sign. I had no numbness at all after my surgery with either hand..

Good luck..

I also had no numbness before or after the surgery. Numbness is a sign that the nerve is partially being compressed and possibly damamged. It needs to remain uncompressed in order to return to full flow. If I were you, I'd do at least 2 things:
1. do not bowl until feeling has almost fully returned.
2. wear a wrist brace in order to prevent your cupping your wrist which will cause the same damage all over again. You know these balls today are SO strong that cupping is not needed AT ALL. Change your style for the sake of your future.

BE PATIENT. You will be able to bowl. and then you want to continue to be able to bowl.

Thanks for the advise.  I guess I will wait.

Anyone else who had it but did not have a surgery?

Yup. I have it also in my left hand which has not had surgery. I worry a lot when the numbness does not go away overnight ... I don't bowl with my left hand but do lots of other pressure related lifting, etc. Rest is the one cure, by the way, like with tendonitis, of which carpal tunnel syndrome is a form.

BTW, FYI, surgery is not the cure-all. It often reoccurrs and a percentage of people who have had surgery, do have to have repeat surgery, when they make the same dumb mistakes that caused it in the first place. I had my surgery in 1994; haev not (yet) needed re-surgery.

Check out this link:
http://powerballs.com/

I used to have pains on my wrist before bec. of carpal tunnel & it made my wrist weak that I couldn't get good revs on the ball at all.It lowered my ball speed from 17-19mph to 14-15mph bec. of pain. But after using this device 5 min. each arm a day, everything went back to normal. Until now,I still use it regularly. I'm really satisfied that I got it. It made my arm strong & even helped me on my game with stronger revs.

I read it before in this forum about someone having a carpal tunnel & his doctor recommended him to get a gyroscope to exercise his whole arm. I said, why not try it.It will only cost me $35.00 if it don't work, but I'm really glad that I got it.It's worth the investment.

Hopefully, this will help.

WOW!  What kind of service it is?

I ordered thru the internet after lunch yesterday and the powerball arrived via fedex on my desk before 11:00!!!

I manage how to operate it after a few attempts and it feels great.  (Too bad that it makes a little sound so I cannot practice it more in the office.)  It gives me the similar feeling to the electric stimulation treatment that I am getting from my physical therapy except that now I can do it at home.

Thanks again Triple X, I will let you know how it goes!!

Alien,
What's nice about that gyroscope that it has a lifetime money back guarantee & lifetime repair & replace warranty, no questions asked. It's really worth the investment.
