Has anyone else tried to adopt a new strategy or mindset for this season? I've changed my mindset this season and I believe that it has helped my focus incredibly.
In previous years, I used to go into league nights saying things like "let's shoot 650 tonight and let things take care of themselves", and "I really need to bear down and put the smack down on my guy the first game to set the tone", and others. Sometimes they worked, sometimes they didn't.
But this season [after a particularly frustrating 2007-2008] I decided to change my way of thinking. I stopped worrying about opponents and setting tones and rather looked inward to see what gets me off my game as an opponent. What gets me is seeing my opponent(s) just keep pouring ball after ball after ball into the pocket and seeing strike after strike after strike. What that implants in my head is that "wow, this is going to be a long night, this guy is lined in and he's showing no signs of letting up."
So this year, I adopted the following goal for myself. Before every league outing, I tell myself, "Every time you pick up a ball in competition, attempt to shoot a no-tap 900." What that does is focus me into feeding the ball into the pocket and attempting to leave makeable, single pin spares.
When do you begin your focus for league night?
What do you tell yourself?
What, if any, goals do you set?
Do you have short term [nightly] goals, or are they all long term goals?
I'd be interested in hearing what drives us to achieve.
