I've never received anything for subbing in league. If I'd paid the league fees, though, I'd expect something in return.

However, subbing in nationals and state events, I've received whatever portion of the prize fund we cashed for.

Maybe a Starbucks gift card or something would be appreciated?

Did they pay when they subbed?  If so, then I would think

(#weeks subbed / Total weeks) * Prize money for that position  

would be a good formula for calculating their fair share.  If they didn't pay while subbing, then I can't see how they have any claim to the prize fund.

Maybe take them to dinner or something for appreciation, but a sub who is not responsible for league fees shouldn't get any of the prize money. They got to bowl for free for 4 or 5 weeks, and could have won money in brackets in stuff.

If they paid when they subbed then they should get a cut.

We make our subs pay, and each person's cut of the prize fund is based on the number of games they bowled.

If they didn't pay, then you don't have to give them anything, but a small token might be the right thing to do.

I remember when I first started bowling.  I paid for the league fees and the prize fund when I subbed, yet never received a dime of whatever the team won.  That really got to me when I started getting into the bowling.

Because of that, I give subs 2 options.  You can pay if you want to and in doing so, will receive a cut of what the team wins.  Or you can opt to not pay, in which case you will receive nothing for the bowling outside of any gambling you do with cards, etc.  

If a sub isn't paying, they are helping the team, yes, but they are also getting free bowling!  I feel that as a team, we own nothing more than that.  If the sub pays or doesn't pay, and we receive money for a team hi score, I will usually give the sub the portion they deserve as well since that's something specific to the night.  Yes....I realize them shooting well also helped us win, but in the grand scheme of things, the points won during the season are done so during the season, not on one particular night.

I subbed for a team and ended up bowling 15 out of the 35 weeks. I received free bowling, made enough in brackets and pots, and when I was at the USBC, they gave me $50. I was surprised and happy. I did not expect that. I'm sure they sat down and gave like 10 a man at the payout. I guess this was the exception but no the rule !

We split prize money according to what share of the league fees you paid.  In my two leagues, I paid every single week, so I get 20% and 25% of the prize money for my team.  If I'd paid half the season, I'd get 10% or 12.5% instead.  One year, I didn't pay the first half, then started the second half when one of our teammates moved.  He got the first half prize money, I got the second half (obviously, it was a split season).

If you give the sub anything, it's basically a tip.  I'm sure it would be appreciated but as someone who's subbed "full time" and who's been a non-paying team member (basically a sub for only that team), I did not feel as though I deserved any of the money the team won.  I never put my own money on the line, I don't get any in return.  No matter how well your team placed or how well the sub bowled, they didn't pay for it.  If they got in brackets or side pots and won money, that is entirely beside the point.
