Different strategy for a no Tap?
« on: January 02, 2006, 05:40:11 AM »
I'm bowling my first no tap today, so I'm curious if I should just play my regular game or if there is a specific kind of strategy?  I would assume the latter, just try to throw a good strike ball and pick up my spares.

The only thing different I do is not look for good carry only a good line to the pocket.

The key is hitting the pocket all the time. So what if you leave a bunch of corner pins?

No other special strategy, just hit your line and stay in the 1-3 pocket zone.

I try to play it as if it were regular 10 pin.

just concentrate on getting to the pocket, your almost garunteed a 750+ that way. i bowled a no tap on new years eve and threw 19 real strikes with 9 no taps and no open frames for a 773. i missed the pocket 3 times all day wich is excellent if you look at my average. i was forced to play down and in since i just coudlnt get the reaction i wanted with my smokin swingin it and got some awsome pin action.

Yeah I try to play as if it was normal bowling.  I bowled a 9 pin tournament on New Years eve and shot 815.  It sucked because I came in 3rd and all my strikes were natural.  I was like man why couldnt this just be regular bowling because I never shot an 800 before.

Last time I did a 9 pin no tap tournament I shot 966. 300x3 plus 22 pins per game handicap. Had 9 no taps in 3 games, basically 3 per game. I still didnt take 1st that year, placed 5th overall. 1st was 1042, 2nd 1002, 3rd 994, 4th 973, then me at 966. I was the only 1 to shoot a 900 9 pin no tap series though. Fun times!!

Just hit the pocket, you'll do fine!

Use a control ball and keep it in the pocket.  Laugh every time you leave a single pin.  --  JohnP

Handicap no-tap  *shudder*

I'm with JohnP.  Throw something that gets you to the pocket and laugh at the 15 flat 10's.  It's your only chance to do so.

And just how does one establish a no-tap handicap? I can't believe they would use your 10 pin handicap. That's crazy. I've honestly never heard of handicap in a no-tap event.

During the summers on Friday nights theres a handicapped 9 pin no tap 4 game tournament. Usually a huge turn out every friday with some very high end bowlers.

We have no-tap tournaments on our award nights at the end of league.  No handicap, though.  But one of the ladies I bowl with won the last one and her normal average is about 130.

And if it's part of your sanctioned league, I think you can still get award scores if the no-tap part wasn't a factor.  If you shot 815 naturally, you should be able to get the ring for it.

If your accurate enough, I attempted to get my former spare ball I no longer bring to league, a 14 lb plastic Columbia White Dot and shot 780 scratch. I also had great a few boards of area on the outside and pounded the pocket nearly every time. But now that my average will end up around 210 I have no desire to bowl a boring sweeper filled with half asked handicapers that only are able to win on thier pure luck cause thier spare shooting is so dismal. Plus I won it the last time and got a whopping 30 bucks.

My opinon of no tap is similar.
The people who win the no tap tournaments are the folks who average 130 because they don't have a prayer of picking up single pin spares.
