Do other sports have complete dunderheads too?
« on: August 28, 2003, 06:27:37 PM »
OK,

I'm usually one who can overlook the fact most bowlers dont really know the ins & outs of equipment. But recently I've seen way too many people with NO CLUE about what is in their bag.

We aren't talking just about having a lot of balls that do the same thing, I'm talking about well.... Take this review of the V2 DRY for example:

quote:
Purchased this ball when I mistook it for the V2 Strong on ebay. Decided to drill it up stacked leverage anyway, just to see if I could tweak it to be an oil ball. Needless to say it didn’t do much. Took it back to the shop and hit it with 140-grit paper, which didn’t do much except for take off part of the label. As a last resort I plugged the weight hole, giving it 1 3/8 ounces of side weight. With that the ball finally moved about the same amount as my particle Scout. What a piece of junk this thing is. Going back up on ebay if anyone wants it.

I honestly hope that this person was kidding, but recently from what I've seen at my house & on various other sites this is a trend.

Do other sports have this problem? I see this almost akin to "I couldn't hit the ball more than 30 yards with this putter, what a piece of junk", but I'm wondering what your take on this is.

Unfortunately, you will find that it is the same folks that are "dummys" as they try different sports/games. Let's face it, the world is full of stupidity and folks that are simply too lazy to really learn something. That's why I never liked jobs where you have to deal with the general public. The majority of the general public are idiots.

Collective intelligence turning into collective idiocy

Anyway that post is funny. I don't know a lot about bowling balls but I know enough not to do what he did. It should be obvious to anyone with more than one ball in their bag (assuming it's not two identical balls ).

That's a classic.
And I'm sure that other sports have the same thing - at least those sports where the equipment is somewhat more sophisticated than the participant!

I had a similar problem with my 9 iron.  I bought it thinking it would be a great club to use in the fairways - get the ball up out of the grass and get some good distance out of it.  However, no matter how I tried, it would send the ball in a high arc up in the air and land about 120 yards away.  Well, I got tired of that real quick, and took it home and proceeded to "rough up" the face of the club, thinking it would grab the ball better and produce a lower trajectory rather than sliding under the ball and popping it up in the air.  However, the stupid thing still doesn't work right, so I'm selling it...

OK, I'm bored and just picking on people... But really, wouldn't the words V2 DRY tell you something about the ball??

What about the clown 300shooter, he posted the Sonic X Solid is an absolute P.O.S.  Well I guess he's not one for reading because I don't think 2.60 RG and Dif of .020 were meant for soups.......................

Psycho,

For those who do not know what corking a bat does; it gives the barrel the strength of a 36 ounce bat, but the feel of a 31.  Imagine swinging a 31 ounce bat knowing if you caught the sweet spot, the ball will come off like it was hit by a 36 ouncer.  Ever wonder why balls hit in batting practice or that HR Derby go MUCH farther than a ball during a game?  Why is it that a guy averages 420 feet per HR during the season, but constantly hits the ball closer to 500 feet during batting practice or HR Derby?  Hmmmmmmm........

Um, how can anybody be threatened by a loser?  We come here to discuss stuff, and it's by far the best on the web.  You could go over to the PBA forums, those are a lot more substance filled *cough cough cough.*  (I might get zapped by lightning for that lie)  Take what you want, and if you don't have anything more "meaningful" to say, don't say anything!  You're just creating trouble by talking like a hardass.

As for the topic at hand, it's terrible.  It's a little hard to compare, because it's an equipment issue, and even though bowling and golf parallel each other the closest, golf clubs are a lot simpler and more self explanitory.  You can tell just by looking at them what number they are to within one.  Bowling balls you have a good idea based on whether they're sanded or polished, but without logos, you wouldn't be able to tell an Inferno from a Scout.  All that means that to the untrained and ignorant, is that they're as blind to the technical data and coverstock as we would be if we didn't have that information.  The difference is that we all wait for the technical data on a ball, they don't.  It's a little sad how easy it is to talk somebody into a bowling ball when they don't have a clue.  You'd think with spending that much money on something that they'd do a little research first.
