Does anyone else wipe their ball down after every use?
« on: April 09, 2009, 01:47:01 PM »
I was wondering if anyone else does this. I wipe my ball down with a microfiber towel after every shot. Say I throw a strike or spare, I then wait on my ball to return if I am using it for a spare, then wipe it off before returning to my seat.

Sopmetime I think peoiple are like, why is this guy so anal about wiping his ball off before every shot.

I have yet to have a ball show reaction loss. So this might be key.

Anyone else do this, or am I the only one.

i do it, and i don't really care what others think about it
it takes like 1 second approx.
then i line up and im gone
plays more into my pre shot routine than anything else, because there is no oil im removing from the ball

I'm exactly like you. I do wipe my ball after every shot. However, I play in three leagues totalling 118 bowlers and I'm the only one in those leagues who do it after every shot. Some do it every now and then but most don't do it at all. Some ridicule me for doing it. However, all PBA pros on TV do it so it must be good.

Part of my pre-shot routine is to wipe the ball off with a micro-fiber towel, whether it needs it or not. While I have never experienced any difference in reaction or ball death over time, it just seems like a good thing to do.

Also, it provides a look at the ball for nicks, sticky black crap from the ball return, scratches and other damage. And, provides a few moments to settle down and mentally review what I am supposedly concentrating on.

Seems to me that waiting for the ball to return and then wiping it off would cause you to be in other bowlers way too often, even if you are careful.

Oh I agree it is a good thing to do. I just stopped doing it. I am not saying it is not a good idea. For some reason about two seasons ago I just stopped doing it. I think a lot to do with it was I just got lazy. I always look the ball over before I use it. When I get back into league next season I am going to get back in the habit. My preshot was always spin the ball 4 times and then squeeze my grip sak 5 times and then get on the approach. I seemed to focus more when I did that.

Pre-shot routine.

Grab ball.
Grab towel.
Spin ball 3 times on towel.
Blow in thumb hole.
Line up.
Roll.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

It's become a habit for me to do so.

So, if you use a dry towel and try to wipe the oil off the ball by applying pressure arent you infact pushing oil into the shell? And especially if your not changing surfaces while you are wiping as the towel will build up oil?

Hmm...

There's a bit of rubbing alcohol on my towel.

Not all towels are created equal. I use a towel developed by Kimberly Clark Corp. that was designed for oil and chemical spills. These are very absorbent and can even be washed. I just use one for about a month and throw it away.

You can't even spin the ball on them in your hand because there is some serious friction. If I forget to grab one of those I still have a microfiber towel as a back-up.

Here is what they look like:

For me it usually depends on the shot or how the lanes are playing. There will be times that I will do it before everyshot to get that consistent reaction. Then there will be times I won't do it and it allows me to get the ball to push just a tad longer if I needed it.

Not usually.

I can't think of a time when I've had a ball die.

Well I guess me and Triggerman are th only ones on here. Personally I have never had someone say something about, or even give me a weird look, I n my head i think they may think it is stupid.

I don't know whenj I started doing it, but now it has become a routine, and makes me feel better doing it.

The place I bowl, when your ball comes back there is very noticable oil wrings around the ball, by the time you get back to your ball wihtout doing what i do they are almost gone, just hints here and there of the oil left ontop of the ball. So all the oil is going into your ball.

This comes especially handy with heavier oil aggressive sanded balls, to keep from getting the shine so quickly. I have thrown my virtual without polish 4 or 5 games at that house, cleaned my ball after every shot regardless, and my ball never picked up much if any oil shine on the ball, so my take it this is a good method, for some of you to try.
