Down to 14lbs.????
« on: October 24, 2003, 09:49:17 AM »
I'm thinking of dropping from 15lbs. to 14lbs. Has anyone here made that change? Any drop in carry%? I think 20 years of revving it up is finally grinding me down.

have switched from 15# to 14#. do not see loss in hitting power. easy to rev. up, got to watch the speed though.

This is one of those "six of one, half-dozen of the other" things.  I dropped from 15# to 14# after injuring my hip over a year ago.

On well-delivered shots, you'll strike just as easily as you did with 15#.  You'll probably also pick up a couple of extra revs.

On the down side, you might not carry off-shots as well as you do now with 15#.

Try to pick up a used 14# version of a ball you currently use and like.  Give it a try, and see for yourself.

14 lb balls when thrown correctly do hit well and drive the pocket.  I also think you can get a good read at the pin deck as to what you need to do to make it work.  Last night was a good example I was throwing a V2 pearl and was hitting the pocket high flush and the ball just drove through the pin deck leaving me about 6 nine pins all night.  I didn't leave a single 10 pin all night.

I find that 14# carries pretty well if you have revs. If you notice too many 10 or 7 pins then the ball is deflecting too much and is to light.

seadrive gets the prize for the correct answer. Throw a good shot and you'll probably not see much difference. Throw an off-shot (like most of us sometimes do), and learn the real definition of punishment.

Certainly throw 14# if it's the ideal weight. But if you can comfortably throw either 14# or 15#, then 15# should be the "no brainer" choice.

I recently switched from 15 to 14 and I think I am getting better carry. My 15# balls seemed to drive to hard. I have also noticed that I seem to have more entry angle with the same ball and drill only being 14. Only difference between the 2 is the 15 had .22 oz (2.86 vs 3.08) more top weight and 1/8" (2 3/4 vs 2 7/8) longer pin. The only thing that I can come up with for the change is that lighter objects are able to change direction faster and I may be getting an extra rev or 2. I think that the extra angle allows me to carry off shots better, at least the pocket seems to be a bit wider now and my accuracy has improved too.
I say go for it.
