4 very good nominees, but I'm betting on Duke, Duke, Duke!  If they would let you see Norm's trick shot with his bowling towel (where he delivers the ball from his towel), I have no doubt that he would walk away with the ESPY.  As for the other 3 candidates, a close second place finish for all 3.

Come on after the year that Walter Ray had.  Wow if he doesn't win it is about as rigged as it was the year before when cdb didn't win.  It is about excellence.  Who had a better year then Walter Ray.

Wrong, it is about entertainment.  That's why PDW won over CDB and Parker.  Carolyn tried to argue that they gave it to Pete because they wouldn't give it to a woman, but if that were the only issue, Parker would have won.

Was Pete the best bowler that year?  No.  Was he the best entertainer in bowling?  Without a doubt.

True I guess you are right Seadrive.  Wish they would change a lot of those categories in the espy's to like most popular bowler.  Things like that cause in more instances than just bowling I have been left scratching my head.

Norm Duke is a fabulous bowler.  I have always envied him.  

But I simply can't see anyone beating WRW for the ESPY.

The women aren't going to win until there is a separate category for them.  Carolyn did have a great year the year she was nominated, but only for a woman.  It still would have been a great year for any of the men, but she wouldn't have won near as many titles or broken any records if she'd have been bowling with the men I don't believe.  Michelle Feldman had a great year as well, but Walter Ray's was far more impressive because of his level of competition.  When you see the same 10 women mixed and matched for the tv finals that really only does one thing, it lets you see your favorite bowlers every week.  That doesn't happen very much on the PBA.  Carolyn might make every show this year, but I really won't be surprised.  It'd have to be an act of God for even Walter Ray to make the show every week this year.  Carolyn's "discrimination" cries after last year's ESPY's really irritated me.

if walter ray williams, jr., doesn't win this award it will be the biggest slap in the face this man has ever witnessed. yes, norm duke shot 300 on tv---a great moment. BUT, walter ray had a YEAR full of great moments:


won the pba world championship
won the bpaa us open
won a "regular" tour stop
finished 2nd in the abc masters
finished 5th in the tournament of champions
led the pba in almost every statistical category
became the first man to win $300,000 in one season
became the first man to win $400,000 in one season
became the first man to win $3,000,000 in career earnings

this doesn't even sound like a contest..........................................

mike miller rolled a 300 game on tv in 1999 and didn't win the award---know what i mean ?

mike miller rolled a 300 game against danny wisemans 266 and tim crisses 226? in the semi-final match of the 1999 national bowling stadium open. he would eventually finish second to ricky ward in the title match. mike miller had a great DAY shooting 300 on tv---yet, he did not win the title, pba player of the year, or the ESPY. yes, it was exciting to watch it---i was on the edge of my seat. but who was player of the year is(was)more important. the espy should go to who had the best year. and besides, walter ray was the only player on the telecast 10 times !

Comparisons are difficult at best if for no other reason than the different formats.  While props certainly go to WRW for surviving the lottery format each week, one has to wonder if he would have enjoyed the same measure of success with the traditional match play formats leading into a stairstep.  

ESPY's are often for entertainment value, and let's face it...an argument could be made that WRW is no more entertaining than was CDB.  While Norm's 300 was a match full of excitement, was he seen enough for the voters to view him as "entertaining?"  Michelle Feldman throws a ball that makes for good entertainment, but the PWBA was (IMO) hindered by the tape-delayed broadcasts.  The fact that we see no PWBA coverage on SportsCenter further hinders any likelihood of one of our members pulling off an ESPY no matter what the season or whether someone could walk on water.  Barnes? Not really entertaining unless you want some cheese to go with the whine that he constantly gets dogged as doing...

Expectation: WRW finds space for another award.

michelle, would walter ray dominate the tournament if it had the traditional matchplay format ?  you're kidding, right ? walter ray williams, jr., DOMINATED this type of format even more than he is right now. he was pba player of the year in 1986, 1993, 1996, 1997, and 1998 under the old format.
