filing down callus question
« on: May 10, 2017, 03:17:27 AM »
has anyone filed down their thumb callus, a beauty expert told me they can do it but I feel it and think it would hurt as much as burning skin off even though below the skin level is a nerve less lump of useless meat.

Has anyone done this?

Do it at home periodically myself.  My callus is so tough that I sctually use 600 grit sandpaper on it, by hand, to work it down slowly.

has anyone filed down their thumb callus,

The way you say that, it sounds like you think everyone has one LOL.

If it's a problem, sure go ahead.

The real problem is you shouldnt be getting a callous in the first place.

You need to get your grip adjusted, in a good fitting grip. You shouldn't be getting callous's or tearing up your fingers or thumb etc.

A callus is a lot different than tearing up your hand.  No matter how good your fit there will always be friction involved which will toughen the skin.

Sometimes I might bowl 4/5 nights in a week so I keep an emery board in my bag at all times to sand down the callus on the inside of my thumb.  Also keep a bottle of superglue for any small cuts that might happen.  Just a little bit and it seals the cut and stops it from getting worse.

Lately I've been wrapping my two finger tips with the cheap white medical tape.  I see most of the pro's on tv with their two finger tips taped up with something so I figured why not try it and I like it.  My release is way more consistent now.  The white medical tape is a lot cheaper and easier to use than the bowlers tape sold at my pro shop.  Also, my finger tips never get cut or split open anymore from too much bowling.
In the bag:  900 Global Zen, Hy Road Pearl, Astro Physix.

I used 100 grit - 220 grit on mine, every once in a while. It's a LOT smaller than it used to be, since using thumb tape. In fact, it's all but non-existent.

FYI, to the orig poster:
It's not called dead skin for nothing. You won't feel a thing until you get down to live skin and, even then, if you use an ounce of caution and light pressure, you'll barely feel that.  I assume you're doing this by hand and not using an angle grinder. :)

When I bowled a lot I developed callus - i don't bowl much, nothing has changed, I have soft baby thumb hahahaha....

when I trained in Martial arts 9 times a week, I developed calluses on my foot, toes, fingers, knuckles, elbow, etc... every wear lol.....

This is how I do it.....

1. Soak the are with warm water for 15 - 20 minutes, depending how big or thick the callus.

2. I use this round stone (they sell them at stores) that is cleaned and sterile and rub the crap out of it. I use nail clippers to trim the area.

In my culture, calluses in certain parts of hands and feet can mean you're a hard worker and a good family man if you're middle class and above. But also mean you're living in hard times too.

I just pick at the edges of my thumb calluses and eventually enough is lifted up that I can then just rip them off. Doesn't hurt one bit.

The same is true for many people working with their hands from common laborers to Italian and Polish brick layers (you should see their hands!!)

But in bowling, a growing callus on the thumb, means your thumb is changing in shape and your thumb hole is not. It means the callus is going to start growing faster because the thumb hole no longer fits you properly.  Your release will be affected eventually - bad!
See if you can find old pictures of Mark Roth's thumb, if that monstrosity could have been called a thumb.

In bowling, a bad thumb is no longer a source of pride; it is no longer a sign of hard work, just stupidity or ignorance.

I've seen photos of MR thumb, it's ugly that's for sure.

The callus I get on my thumb is more of harden skin on the back (of thumb) from friction with magic carpet tape and having a tight thumb fit. But, I did develop callus on the medial side of my thumb due to bad fitting. My round Rasp was used often lol....

When I bowled a lot, the carpet tape darkened my skin over time and made it really hard/rough. It also increased my thumb size. but I like that darn thing....

Pumice stone!! that's the one...thanks Charlest!
