Finding Balance w/Video: Any advice?
« on: April 11, 2006, 08:31:21 AM »
To all:

Well, I have been practicing, getting some
coaching every now and then and am getting back
my old classic form. Darn tough to re-program muscle memory
after a long hiatus, eh?

Here is the new me, better timing and form. However,
I am still looking to improve. Sorry, the angle
is only from behind. Any coaching advice? Do you
notice anything to fix? (i.e. keeping my
shoulders more level, etc).

Most everyone here in this forum is helpful most of the
time so I thought I would ask for advice here again.

Coach me up!

Thanks for your time.

After watching the vid several times it looks like you drift left. It starts with your first step crossing over in front. It is important to try and get that first step straight out in front as this will keep you square to foul line and give you better balance.

What I saw was a failure to complete your post/finish position until the ball goes off the end up the pin deck.  Even on your good shots (except the very first one), you don't hold it long enough.  This allows you to then pop up slightly from the line.  I don't know if this is maybe just impatience, or you are following your ball to quickly to the pins with your eyes and taking your eyes off your target too soon.

Your balance arm.  You start using it in the beginning of your approach then just let it dangle kind of by your side.  Keep it steady and extended at least out from your side or slightly behind you.  Its not really doing its job at the finish, which is assisting you with balance.

So just a couple things for starters.
hold your finish longer
stay down, no rising up
extend balance arm

I wouldn't worry too much about the drift unless it varies from shot to shot.  So when you are practising, take about 1/2 dozen shots and make sure you look down and record your finish board.  This will also help you hold your shot longer too.  :-)

Great, you'd make a great student.  Such informative feedback.  If you didn't want to know why'd you ask?  Taking a poll?

Next time don't expect the information for free.

man, it looks like your finish is fine. You stay in one spot, you're level, and don't fall over.  You don't "pop up slightly from the line," but from what i saw, you rise up after you set the ball down.  There's nothing wrong with that.  It's not good to lean way over and then raise your t*ts to the sky, lol, but you don't do that.  And the arm swing is straight as well.

Man, considering you took 10 years off, you still look like you've got it.

Atochabsh...

By this do you mean "posting at the line" until the pins are hit?

And, yes, I can't seem to convince my balance arm to do what I want. It just
has a mind of its own. Any tips on keeping it "out" for balance?

As for drift, you should have seen me six months ago. I'm glad I've carved the
drift down to five boards. I am now trying to "step into my center of gravity"
on the finishing slide.

Thanks for the tips.

..err.... uh, just notice this...

huh? Sorry, didn't mean to offend (did I?) I was just waiting for a few
comments to compile before responding to them...

TxStateBowler:

You should have seen what I looked like when I first picked up the bowling
ball after the decade off. I had really late timing, so late, I would fall to
the right practically three lanes worth. Balance leg? Oh, it was confused.
Plus, I was old school full roll with tons of lift. It was ugly. I had to
force my body to remember what I was able to do back in my twenties.

Live and learn (again).

I think she said the thing about "free info" cus you said "bump." I don't know what that means, but she took it the wrong way i guess...

Plus, i ran across some other posts she made, and she didn't seem like she was in the best mood yesterday lol.

And what does bump mean, anyway?

"bump" = this post had fallen to the third page of postings. So I was
"bumping" it back to the top so more people would give the thread a view
in case anyone had missed it. People do it all the time.

"Bump" means that that reply "bumped" the thread back to the top of the list on the home page.  This way, people can see the thread topic and respond to it.

I'm sorry that I did misunderstand.  I've been on the internet for 20 years and this is the first time I've seen this "bump" thing.  To me, it looked kind of like a "shrugging of shoulders", which was a poor assumption for me to make.

People that know me, know that I pretty freely offer advise.  sometiems its right sometimes its wrong, sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn't.  Others say I offer too much.  I've invested a lot into coaches training classes and the first thing mentioned was "do not give your information away for free", "always charge".  I have not always followed that dictate, because I believe that its something to read information and another to be personally coached to put it in action.  I also remember that I have been helped and continue to be helped by friends and better bowlers, so I feel that the favor should be returned to a point.  Most people cannot coach themselves, no matter how much they read.
