I've had the same problem as you described. Because generally you get such good lift with grips, I just went up one size to reduce friction and got away from quarter pitch or pillow grips. I also now pitch finger holes away 1/16 or 1/8. My fingers still swell, but at a much slower rate. This helped me get through tournaments without needing to change grips in the middle of block.
