Grip question
« on: September 26, 2007, 01:07:35 PM »
Why would i have to squeeze the ball to hold on to it, can any one give me reasons why.

Thumb pitches ???
Span to long to sort ?
Finger pitch ?
Ball weight to heavy ?

Thumb hole too big or too much thumb reverse pitch.  --  JohnP

Thumb with too much reverse and/or lateral pitch?

Thumb hole too large?

Could be a combination of several things. After having as much as 3/16 reverse and 3/16 left a few years ago, I have gradually come back to zero and zero. I don't need nearly as much grip pressure as before.  I haven't had any issues with the thumb not exiting cleanly, either.

I have 1/4 left and 1/4 reverse pitches. Maybe i should back it off to 0 and 0

Get an older ball and try it before drilling a new one. You'll probably be fine, but if it gives you trouble, you may end up halfway...  I do not have a very flexible thumb by any means, and the new pitches have been a nice change.

xxZonexx - I had the same problem as you have. I started out with 1/4 reverse and 1/4 right, went to 1/16 reverse and 1/4 right and now I'm trying 1/8 forward and 0 lateral..

It's gonna take a while for the thumb and mind to get used to the new pitch, so use only the ball you've changed pitch on for some time..

Even if the ball is drilled correctly, you might hang onto it too long due to a bent upper body. This feels like squeezing, but has in fact a different technical source, in your overall body posture. Even if the hole is (too) big, you will tend to cling to it. And mayn factors can come together - I'd ask a pro shop, coach or ball driller to watch you play and check the ball, to find a proper remedy.
