Frustrated - Update

I can't bowl for at least a few more days.  I possibly strained a tendon in my left arm and my coach advised no bowling for at least a few days.

It probably began on Sunday.  I went to league and couldn't release my spare ball or Black Widow.  I sent 3 shots airball, at least two of them never made it to the pins.  The thumb was not too tight, just very tacky.

Yesterday, I had a session/lesson with my coach.  It went very well, we worked on my release, then spare drill.  From there it was just bowl and he would tell me what spares.  For example a 4 pin alone became a 4-7-10, a 3 pin became a 3-6-7, etc.  I started stringing them, he told me the spare was the 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10  There wasn't any scoring on, and I wasn't counting ... Juan was.  I came up high and left a 2-4-7, he told me I had just strung 10 in a row and if I picked it p, it was a 287.  I picked it up  Granted it was practice and only using one lane, but even in practice I have never shot 10 in a row.

Okay, I am stoked but near the end of the session, I felt something in the inside of the elbow.  It didn't really hurt, more just annoying.  I didn't think too much of it, went home rested, got some dinner and then off to league.

I rolled about 4 shots and finally had to pull back a shot.  With each ball, the pain got worse so I grabbed the cell phone and called my coach.  The good thing is the pain is isolated to the elbow and does not radiate down to the wrist.  He advised icing it and not bowling for at least a few days.

So I didn't bowl and will not bowl Wednesday, either league.  It is killing me to not bowl.  I have logged in around 262 games since Dec. 15th, bowling almost every day either league or practice.  It is all I can do to not pick up a ball and just see if I can bowl pain free.

Oh well, this too shall pass and better to not bowl now rather than later for much longer.  Thanks for reading.

In my old opinion you have bowled more games in 6 weeks than most people bowl in 2 leagues for the whole season. Could be you might have over done it a bit?

I think rest is the best thing and don't worry about your bowling, it will still be there waiting when you get better.

LOL you are probably correct.  

I have been preparing to bowl my first Western Women's Professional Bowlers Tournament February 24th & 25th.  I want my release and swing plane to be consistent.

When I first started working with Juan in Feb. '05 I told him one of my goals was to be good enough to bowl in the WWPB tourneys.  So this is really a big step for me and  I want to be in the best form I can be.

You'll be lucky if it's only a few days. I know people who missed entire seasons with injuries.

Just some advice, don't rush back.  I have back problems and many times when my back gave out I tried bowling and it just made things worse.  As I learned, it's not fun to have to miss a week or two, but it's even worse when you rush back and then end up having to miss a few years like I did.  

When you feel ready, just go and throw a few shots and take it from there.

That's what my coach said.  He even went further to say test it buy swinging the ball without releasing it first.  Then if it feels alright, to only bowl a game or two, if even that.

I tested the arm at home by swinging a ball with no release yesterday.  It felt pretty good.  I went and rolled a few games.  The good is the arm felt good.  The bad is the mental game is shaken.  My mechanics were foo for about a game and a half.  Then when I finally got to releasing the ball fairly well, I was babying it and killing the reaction.

I consulted my coach who said to take it easy and the fact I want to get back shows the mental game is not in as bad shape as I may think.  He did recommend cutting down on practice for a few weeks and gradually building back up just before the tourney.  

The format is Saturday 9AM 5 games, break/lunch/meeting/re oiling 2:30 5 more games.  Then they cut to the top 12 for match play Sunday.

I'm going to get in 2-3 games today and probably no more until my lesson Sunday.  I am sure glad it seems to be a minor injury.

TP,

Not sure of your elbow injury but it does sound like tendonitis.  I'd suggest getting an elbow brace so you don't injure futher.  Ya know the strap that goes around the upper forearm just below the elbow and holds the muscles tight to the bone.  Velcro fastened and adjustable for tightness.  That is........if that is where it hurts.
