Heavy Oil is Killing Me
« on: February 06, 2008, 06:29:41 AM »
I bowl on a very competive league on Friday nights.  It's a handicap league but the lowest average bowlers are in the 190's.  I have been struggling at this house for several months and the majority of my issue is no matter what ball I seem to try I eithier skid past the break point or hit it to early and go high in the pocket.  This is not a typical house pattern.  Lanes are flooded in the middle and pretty dry from 10 out.  Due to the heavy oil I have been trying to go straighter at the pocket.  Standing 18 trying to hit around 12 at the arrows.  I've almost convinced myself that his angle might be part of the problem and I'm think about moving to say 24 and targeting 13-14 to get more snap on the backend.  I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to combat this condition?  My equipment lineup and info can be found in my profile.  Thanks in advance for your help

Try squaring up further right with something rolly and just bump the dry.

Have you tried to target your breakpoint a little futher down the lane?

You may want to pull out your No Mercy for that line.

If you have dry boards then there isnt a "heavy oil" pattern.
Try a tighter line, playing inside the oil line, or get a weaker ball.

You may have a severe wet dry.

Columbia had a great tip on this ...I no longer can easily find it!

The main point was take a strong ball.  Get feet in oil and aim 5 boards outside the oil line instead of the typical just outside the oil line(for more blended patterns).  Hope this is CLEAR and helps!

Actually, what you describe is a pretty typical house pattern, I call it adult bumper bowling.  The dry on the outside kicks balls back towards the pocket, and the oil in the middle holds tugged shots from breaking so they slam into the pocket.  The way your playing it, your ignoring the dry which forces you to create the reaction in heavy oil, and not using what the lane gives you.  Try standing around 18-20 and throwing up 8-9, playing it pretty straight.  You'll find you'll get a more consistent, stronger reaction.  You may need to play with where you stand on the approach, but you'll probably like the results once you iron out the kinks.  To get our desired reaction, we need some dry and you have been avoiding it.

You current plan of attack requires extreme consistency in release and ball speed.  (I tried it an failed)  Now, if you really want to play in the oil, you can, but you will probably want an early rolling med/heavy ball, and you will need to be VERY consistent with ball speed.  However, the lane condition dictates bouncing the ball off of the dry.

This could be lengthy but I'll try to keep it short.
I posted a few times about house hacks and THS wall shots. I couldn't find all the links but here's one; http://www.ballreviews.com/Forum/Replies.asp?TopicID=187053&ForumID=16&CategoryID=5

People complain about how easy THS conditions are and what-not. Well I was complaining too but what good does that do? Besides, if THS wall shots are so easy then why was I just averaging 205 on them? Not only that, other people complaining about THS wall shots are not caring a real high average either. I don't bowl tournaments and if I do happen to bowl in one, it will be scratch. So what harm will it do to "inflate" my average?

As I was talking about on the other link, I had league night tonight with my new ball, Columbia Resurgence.

The lanes had more oil than in the first half of the league. I played 10 board at arrows to about 5-6 board at break point. The line held all game and I shot 268. Left a 7 pin and solid 9 pin.
The 2nd game my line was drying out. 2nd ball hit high for a split. Moved deeper but tried playing a tight line instead of the "area" THS gives. Hit lite pocket for 10 pin, missed spare. Threw lite again for another split. Finally in the 8th frame I played the "area" with a little more swing and hook. Went off the sheet for 204. Transition was still happening so I moved deeper in the 3rd game. Played 14 board at arrow out to about 10-8 at break point. Shot 249 last game for 721. Looks like my new Resurgence ball will allow me to play the "area" shot on THS conditions. I just need to figure out that transition from the end of the first game to the middle of the second.

Above is the link to the post I wrote a few days ago.  I was having the same issue you were having.  I was playing 7-9 board at the arrows out to about 5-6 at the break point with my Apogee. Then as the oil transitioned I moved deeper.  But again if I got it out a little early, it would hit the nose.  If i missed my mark a bit on the inside or oil, it would skid too much.
So far the Resurgence has done what I had hoped it would.  In practice i am doing pretty good with this ball and first night of league i shot 721.  We will see how I continue to do with this ball.

i throw probably about 14-15 mph, I don't have a lot of rev's.  If I had to guess, 250-300?
