Help me convert my rolling style...full vs. 3/4
« on: April 05, 2005, 05:17:16 AM »

Ok, I'm a card carrying full roller trying to convert to a 3/4 roller
(semi-roller).

I manage to toss a ball every now and then with the track outside the
thumb/finger holes, but can not honestly feel the difference from my
regular track between the fingers and thumb.

What is the secret?

Specifically, at the release point, what is different from releasing a
full roller vs a semi-roller (3/4roll) track? What is different for the
thumb/fingers release/position? What is different about the follow through?

Is it more about drill pattern than release?

Hey Dr. Joe,

Typically with a full roller release, a bowler's hand is turning from flat or suitcased position clockwise while a semi roller is turning their hand counter clockwise during the release motion.

Imagine a clock pasted on the masking unit above the pins, now hold your hand straight out in front of you, palm facing the ceiling.  If you rotate clockwise from this position, it becomes the full roller release and if you rotate it counter clockwise, it becomes the semi release.  To exaggerate the full roller release even more, if you continued it more with your wrist, it actually can become a back-up ball.  Hope this helps explain some or feel free to message me and I can explain in more detail, thanks.

Ok, maybe I'm not understanding something. So here is some more information
about my current release and a few more questions.

I am a right handed bowler. My "A game" is usually from broads 20 out to 8
back into the pocket. I am able to adjust my game by going left and hooking
more or right and playing straight. I always leave a full roller track on the
ball no matter my game at the moment.

Setting up the directions. If looking down at the ball at release. 12-o'clock
is pointing toward the pins, 3-o'clock to the right, 6-o'clock opposite the
pins, 9-o'clock towards the left.

When I hold the ball during my pushaway, armswing, and release my thumb is
usually angeled toward my body and my fingers are angled away. If looking
down at my ball at my release point my thumb will be on top pointing toward 10-o'clock and fingers at 4-o-clock on the side of the ball. I do not rotate my hand at
all during the swing and release. My thumb and fingers stay in the same
orientation right to my release. My hook comes from my thumb exiting the ball
before my fingers and then my fingers lifting upward with the follow though.
I don't rotate my hand clockwise nor counterclockwise during the release.
I leave a full roller track.

I don't understand this statement. When am I doing this? At the release? My
hand position is already counterclockwise from 6-o'clock at the release.
I don't even come close to a back-up ball (thumb at 1-o'clock fingers at
7-o'clock at release.)

It is a matter of changing my follow-through if I am already in the
correct aspect at the line?

Dr. Joe have someone hold the ball for you in your back swing i think you will be surprised that your hand does rotate flatter as Rick stated above. Your hand has a tendacy to do the same motion over and over from body construction and your position of your body at the line.

I studied this all the time working with Bill Hall it was good to see myself on video from behind and the side you will be surprised of what you conceve you are doing and what you are really doing through the approach to the line.

The easiest way i teach my friends learn the hook 3/4 roller is too take a nerf football and throw underhand spirals to someone catching the ball. You then can practice with a bowling ball in open play do not attempt in league unless you want to drop pins off but then again you might be a natural once you give it a go.

I use hand positions to change my roll but have trouble getting enough tilt which is very hard to change, i can go from up the back over the holes to about 80 degrees by fanning the ball ala Pete Weber style. It is very useful for picking up splits and picking the 3,6,9,10 up with normal basis, so keeping your full roller style just makes you more of knowledgable bowler so keep it and learn 3/4 also then depending on the lanes you will be more deadly scoring wise.

Dr. Joe, sounds to my like you throw the full roller the way I used to, 30 odd years ago.

Try this:  as you release think of you thumb as flicking upward.  Start with your thumb at about 1 o'clock (with palm under ball the thumb will be rotated slightly away from your body).  On release rotate slightly towards 11 and flick upwards.  Mind you, this was the advice I got when trying to switch and it only took my 2+ years to get it right.

Dr. Joe,

Don't get me wrong and no offence...

I dont see anything wrong with being a full roller, just another style to bowl, true you can be more versatile after u convert, but dont force it, I have seen a guy tried so hard to change to 3/4 for so many years and struggle for so many years, and recently he change back to full roller, and averaging over 200 again.

Bowl with what you have
