Helping A Friend Bowl Better
« on: August 27, 2007, 01:56:17 AM »
I have a friend that really isn't bowling that good but for the people he bowls with he is pretty good.  I want to make him a better bowler and trying to figure out way to do this without hurting his feelings...

He watches me and the other guys bowl but I know he is afraid to bowl with us because he doesn't want to get embarrassed... Personally if we are practicing I don't care what place I come in

If they are a good friend, then they should be able to take your suggestions without feelings getting involved.

But I would get a video camera and tape them. Then both of you sit down and watch the tape so your friend can see what you are trying to tell them. Alot of people can not see what they are doing wrong while they are doing it. But when they watch a tape, they can now see what you are trying to tell them.

As the old saying goes, SEEING IS BELIEVING.

Two suggestions -
1) If you are good friends just offer to help him.  Tell him just what you said here - he is good at his level, but you want to help him get to the next level.

2) If you are not that close then, invite him to practice with you, just the two of you.

While practicing make a few suggestions to help him.  Comments like I notice you do this ... you might try this.  It keeps it non-threatening and allows him the choice to try the suggestion or not.  Also don't try to change too many things, two to three things in any session is about the max.  If it works well, schedule another "practice" session with him and continue the process.

It's all in how you present the idea of giving help I think.  I don't think anyone would want to pass up some free advice.

Don't forget the possibility that he can't afford to bowl with you, especially if you're young.  --  JohnP
