high track over thumb hole
« on: October 30, 2009, 05:07:10 AM »
A friend just got back into bowling after a 6 year layoff.  He just bought a Storm Furious drilled pin over ring.  The only way I can describe his shot is  Pete Weber side roll.  However, the ball rumbles over the thumb down the lane the first couple of feet.  Even when he tries to stay behind the ball the ball tracks over the thumb and close the the middle finger. Does tracking over your holes affect the way the ball reads the lane and pin carry?
Is he waiting on the ball too long, or grabbing the ball too much?   Does he need to correct his release?

As long as it's only hitting the holes in the front part of the lane it isn't really hurting the roll if he can stand the noise.  Try having him cock his wrist toward his pinkie finger, that may lower the track away from the holes.  --  JohnP

I would bet the ball is just too weak for the condition. Remember the weaker the ball the higher you will track. I rumble over my thumb on my spare ball alot. Have him throw one of your aggressive balls to see if that ball tracks lower. It is worth a shot doing that than trying to fix a non existent problem.

A friend of mine has this same problem and I do occasionally also.  My buddy has a Cell Pearl and it is the only ball in his 6 or 7 ball arsenal that rolls over the thumb.  The first 2 oil tracks are right over the thumb then it's fine after that, he has tried everything to get it off his thumb but it doesn't work.  He is an excellent player but this one has baffled him for the last 2 months.

High track is usually a result of too much grip pressure: squeezing, "death grip", whatever you want to call it.  Low flaring cores/drillings make matters worse, but the release is what causes the clipping.  Stronger cores/drillings just get you rolling away from the holes earlier down the lane, the ball still hits the holes the first couple revs if you are a high tracker.

Sounds like he is throwing a full roller.  If he is, he needs to turn the ball more not less to try to move his track lower.  Drilling a full roller  with a high pin in is not the normal layout. Ask him to go to is pro shop and check out his track to insure his is a full roller and then plug and redrill the ball.

If this is the case,  then he could have his middle finger drilled a little deeper..This will add some some weight and make the ball stronger...

Okay, if he's wrong then why don't you provide him with a problem solving suggestion? Just saying "wrong" is wrong.

Sounds like he might be turning just a bit too early.

How is his timing?  is he pulling shots at all?  you said he had a layoff, it could be bad timing.  I had an issue with a higher track and it turned out to be a timing thing causing me to turn the ball to early, fixed the timing track moved almost 2 inches.

Put some tape in his thumb hole.  My buddy, who has had trouble hitting his thumb hole with the first 2 oil rings, put a couple pieces of tape in his ball last night.  His Cell Pearl has been the only 1 that has given him a problem with rolling over the thumb hole.  However, since it is getting colder here in Ohio I have noticed my hands not swelling as much so I add tape to my thumb hole.  I had him put enough tape in his thumb hole to where it was almost too tight.  We rolled 4 games lastnight in a league and not once did he hit the thumb hole.  Don't overthink your problems, he was hitting his thumb because he was grabbing the ball trying to hold on to it.  Start simple and work your way from there.
