Hitting the Pocket and leaving the 5 pin
« on: December 15, 2008, 02:49:43 AM »
I watched a bowler beside me this week who hit the pocket and left the 5 pin. He did it twice. This doesn't make sense to me. He was playing 2nd arrow (down and in). Using a high end ball (Black Widow). He didn't have much rotation but still a high end ball (16 mph +) hitting the pocket going towards the 5 and doesn't hit it?

I have done this with a plastic ball playing down and in but it seems strange with a high end ball.

Talkin' Trash!

Have you heard of the saying, "no drive no five?"

Tossing a so-called high end piece does not make the bowler any better... if the release is crap (e. g. with tons of spin and speed) or the ball just not appropriate for the condition at hand, you will easily see interetsing leaves even on good pocket hits.

Sounds like this person doesn't have much hand and more then likely missed 3 boards right, and the ball did not recover, thus the light hit.
Also the coverstock could be an issue.  On this nite the coverstock may have been too weak for the amount of oil on the lanes.

This is actually very common with the line he plays.  Most bowlers THINK they hit the 10 board, but more then likely he was missing 2-3 boards right.

Maybe he should try a little more surface on his ball.

good luck

He must be working the outside of the ball.

If the cover is two strong it could roll out and hit week as well

Let's see in Billy's day it was rubber on lacquer with guys some of who were full rollers.  That lil up and atom shot in the track on lacquer could be devasting if executed right back in the day.

Maybe the ball was a lightweight 14# or under?

We had a bowler in our scratch league use the same high end ball and leave TWO 5-7-10's in the same game..

Both teams nearly fell over laughing as this person thinks he's the next WRW..

Ball is probably rolling out, especially playing 2nd arrow where there's probably no oil.  Otherwise, Dude needs to put some fingers in the ball, just a suggestion.

I see many Cells, BW solids and Bites, Total Nv's and so forth many of these people cannot strike with any ball not matter what. They throw the ball so poorly and then some of them cuss and kick ball returns, it is funny to watch this on a weekly basis.

I watch a guy who is 170ish weekly go into absolute orbit if he does not strike or convert a spare. My team is stuck next to his team weekly with the schedule followed, I cringe when he flags a spare which is about 2-3 a game normally. The guy screws us up on a weekly basis when we are on approach and going into a slide and then boom ball return or just yelling as loud as he can.

Before the league the guy is my friend but bowling around him sucks, he is like being near John McEnroe after a bad call from an line judge.

Missing inside on a house shot is an easy way to leave a 5 pin if you don't have a higher rev rate.  I left a weak five pin on the same lanes where I was fighting leaving stone 9s the other night, and it was simply because I missed it left a ton on that shot and got in the oil and it never got into a strong roll.

What about a 5-7-10 on a pretty good shot.  Last week I went

9/xxxx5/7/10xx4-9x4-9

1st frame was a solid 9pin, ball drove right past it.  Both 4-9s were a smidge high but everything else was pretty good.  Sad part is that this was my best game all night.

My teammate left a 5 pin this week.  In the 11th frame.  After 10 in a row.  Shot 290 that game and 816 on the night.  It happens, even to guys who are great bowlers.

As long as you know that you always miss those 2-3boards right it doesnt matter.
