House League?
« on: July 14, 2006, 05:26:08 PM »
I'm from Sweden and I have no idea what your "House Leagues" is? Can someone please explain?

Do you go all over the country to play like we do in our different leagues here in Sweden or do you stay at one place?

Most leagues bowl in one house.  There are some travel leagues that bowl in different houses, usually within a given area, on a rotating schedule.  Most houses offer a variety of leagues depending on their customer base.

Crossbar, House league can and usually does, reffer to the type of condition bowled on. Here in the States we have what is known as The House Shot or THS as it is lovingly reffered to on this and other forums. The House league is bowled on a condition that has very little oil on the outside of the lane (usually outside of 10) and a river of oil up the middle. This way if a shot is missed to the outside it will hook back and if it is pulled it will hold. It is what enables Robby Mushtare to bowl 900s.

I have read articles by some of the best bowling coaches in the world who say that in your country you do not have lane conditions like our house shot and bowl on what we call a Sport condition, where oil is applyed evenly across the lane gutter to gutter, is this true, or do you guys have Adult bumper bowling there too?

CoachJim,

At the groundroots level every sanctioned bowler in Sweden is a member of a bowling club (all clubs are non-profit and based entirely on voluntary work). These bowling clubs have from 10 to 200 members and can have one or several teams playing in leagues as well as one or more club practice sessions a week during the season.

Leagues are organized by the national federation and by district associations. A league in our national league system consists of six teams. Most teams in a league come from different centers in different towns in the same region. The six teams in one league meet each other in home and away matches. In addition, all six teams in one league play away matches against the teams of one neighbouring league at the same league level, and home matches against against the teams in another neighbouring league at the same league level (kind of like the NHL).

There is no prize money involved. All teams play play for the honour of their club and to advance to higher leagues and ultimately to win the national league play-off and become Swedish Champions. If I take part in all my team's away matches next season, I will have faced 17 other teams, and I will have bowled league matches in 10 bowling centers beside my team's home center. That's pretty typical.

The regular league match format here is eight player teams divided into four duo constellations. Each duo plays one game against each duo of the opposing team. Every game counts for one matchplay point. Matches take 100 minutes and eight lanes.

I wouldn't go so far as to describe the average Swedish bowling center as sport bowling compliant. Lane patterns are mostly christmas tree variations. Some centers are tougher and some easier. Generally, a team from a center which puts out a soft condition will be at a disadvantage when playing away matches against teams in tougher centers. Usually, the teams which are best at adjusting lane play on away matches win their leagues. A team won't be able to win a league if it isn't able to win away matches. And to be able to win away matches you have to be able to adjust.

Back in the day, they used to have teams that were comprised of the best bowlers around, there used to be a championship, followed by the Allstar tournament. The PBA tour put an end to team bowling since all the best bowlers left to join the tour, and the Allstar tournament was changed to the US Open.

From this point on, high stakes competative bowling, has been geared towards individuals more than teams.

We bowl for fun, then join a league, learn to bowl, compete in high stakes amature events like the High Roller and Mini Eliminator, compete internationally through team USA, then progress to the regional tour then if we are lucky enough to the exempt tour.

Dear Machine/Hammer,

Sorry, can't get a Strike Machine here yet. Besides, would you be willing to pay the $260 for the ball and the $100 for shipping that it would set you back?

CoachJim,

Thanks for the background. It added to my understanding of bowling in the US.

We haven't seen too many American bowlers participate in Swedish leagues. But I do think that Tim Mack was part of the team when Team Pergamon won the Swedish League Championship a few years ago. Team Pergamon has dominated the Swedish Elite League in the last three or four years. Bill Hoffman has been on the same team a few times.
