how do you find your PAP on an undrilled ball?
« on: August 16, 2004, 10:19:41 AM »
Since my PAP is 5 3/4 over, and 3/4 up, how do I find that on an undrilled ball?!?!?!

U can only find it when u map out how u want the ball drilled....lay the ball out, measure 5 3/4 over from the center of your span, stop there and then measure 3/4 up......there is ur PAP.

But say I want to drill a ball 5 x 5 for example, how do I know where to measure 5 inches from?!

Huh?

Your PAP has nothing to do with the ball.  It has to do with where the holes are.

Draw your holes on the ball, find the center point, measure from there... that's your PAP.

It takes a little trial and error to get a perfect 5X5 layout.  There will only be one point (actually 2, but only one on the positive) which is 5" from your CG and Pin.

Get a compass (or some device you can use to draw circles with) and draw a circle with a radius of 5" from the pin (for a 5" pin to PAP distance.)  Then do the same from the pre-drilling CG.  The circles will intersect at two points.  The intersection will represent where your PAP should be (you'll have to pick the correct intersection of the two for the drilling you are trying to achieve!)  From the intersection point, use a quarter scale to draw in your vertical and horizontal axis values.  The finishing position will be the center of your grip, which will put your PAP at 5" from the pin, as well as 5" from the CG.  This method works for any "A x B" type drilling, where "A" is the pin to PAP distance, and "B" is the CG to PAP distance.

There's an easier way to map the special circumstance of an "A x A" drilling.  First, draw a line going through the pin and CG.  Then draw a perpendicular bisector line PB to this line.  Now draw a line of length A from either the pin or CG to PB.  Where this line intersects PB is your axis point.  Follow the instructions above to find the center of your grip.  Based on your PAP, this mapping will give you a pin-PAP and CG-PAP drilling of length A.  Handy for those 3.375" x 3.375" max leverage drills.

u have to consistently measure the pin and cg from ur axis to figure out th right position for a 5 by 5 drilling...for most people, it's a pin over bridge, cg in center of palm drilling.... dont worry about the numbers, just keep the drilling simple.

A pin over my bridge is only 4" away.  I'd get a totally different reaction if I kept the "drilling simple" as you suggested.

Don't you think your $200+ investment is worth the five minutes it takes to layout the ball?

Kid,

If you want a 5 x 5 then the first thing to do is find the point that is 5" from the pin and 5" from the CG.  I find the quickest way to do this is with an armadillo, but you can use a ball compass or a quarter scale.  Once you find the point, then you've found where you want your PAP to be.

Next you measure backward from that point to find your grip center.  In your case, you measure 3/4 down and 5 3/4 over.
