How does your house strip/oil?
« on: January 25, 2007, 02:54:54 PM »
Until this season the manager would strip and oil right before first shift league and then do an overlay oil in the am (there are a LOT of senior leagues at this center). This year the new manager made the decision to strip and oil in the am and do an overlay right before leagues. And then they allow open bowling until the leagues start!! The heavy carry down and unpredictable patterns we see in leagues is almost laughable (if I wasn't so ticked!).

First, it drives me nuts that the leagues don't get a freshly stripped, oiled pattern. Second, it drives me even crazier that they let people bowl on these lanes before league begins.

So I guess my question is: does your center do a full strip/oil before first shift evening leagues and do they allow open bowling on those lanes in the 30-45 minutes before leagues begin?

At my house it depends. Sometimes they let people bowl on them before league and sometimes they oil just before league.

According to my buddy who works the desk, they strip and oil before 1st shift night leagues and oil only for the AM leagues.  Saturday Junior leagues, oil only and strip and oil just before Sunday 6PM league.

No open play is allowed after 5:30 PM.  At 6PM they do allow open play on lanes not used by the first shift league even if there is a second shift league that uses the lanes.

The lanes the leagues bowl on are stripped and oiled every day(Kegel Ion).
No open bowling is allowed on the leagues lanes once they have been ran.

As it should be!!

Oil once a day in the morning... Anyone that has a league later in the day is darn lucky to get a fresh shot.

On a side note, when the owners are approached with complaints about the oil, they just use the "if you are good you should be able to adjust".  This is true, it just really isn't fair when we have 8 teams in the league and half are bowling on a very friendly fresh pattern, and the other half is bowling on the birthday party special.  The high game pots don't care what type of oil you have, so you can be at a HUGE disadvantage before you even walk through the door.

I could not agree more, that is the response we get....you should be able to adjust!! Whatever happened to fair play? We should all be bowling on the same freshly stripped applied pattern. Even if it's tough....who cares, just make it all the same.

That is EXACTLY what I have experienced for the last 25 years!! I don't understand the new manager's philosophies....except that HE seems to bowl well on them!! Maybe that is the true motivation.

Two ways to look at this......

With the former way they oiled your lanes, it appears the Seniors had to bowl on used conditions.

Now with the new way they oil the lanes it appears that you get the used conditions.

So who should get the newly oiled conditions and who should get the used conditons? Not fair for you to have to bowl on used lane conditions and it isn't fair for the Seniors to have to bowl on used lane conditions.

Just oiling once a day, it is impossible to make everyone happy. I don't know what the answer is to your problem. It's sort of a case of darned if it is and darned if it isn't....lol

I experience both. One house strips and oils in the morning, then just overlays just before a league at night.

Another house strips and oils before every league no matter when it occurs.

Boy have we all gotten spoiled.

I remember well the times when you were lucky to get the lanes stripped once a week (maybe) let alone daily.

Most of the houses around here use lane machines that can strip and oil on one pass.

Right now my home house strips and oils before the high school bowlers come in after school. Leagues afterwards get what is left.

When high school bowing is not going on we get the fresh condition or what ever is left from any open bowling from league.

I can score equally well on the used shot or fresh shot, I just have slightly different strategies

You can’t expect the house to shut down for an hour or two before leagues and not let anyone bowl.

I would assume they run the lanes again first thing in morning if they have day leagues but I don’t know that for a fact.

I'm with you.  While I don't remember the days when lanes were stripped once a week or oil was applied with a bug sprayer, I do feel that you can only bowl on what's out there.  Your opponents are bowling on the same lanes you are, they're having the same troubles you're having.  If they're not, then they're clearly better than you and shouldn't they deserve the win?  What does it matter what some other pair has if you're not bowling on it?

The center here typically oils (dunno about stripping, though I'd guess they do) in the afternoons.  Sometimes 3pm, sometimes 5pm.  I was told by a teammate that they were oiling when he got there at 6pm and the league starts at 7pm.  If there are any customers after they oil, they're hardly going to turn them away, but weekday afternoons aren't usually really busy, so only a few lanes get traffic, and not much at that.  Sometimes the shot has screaming backends, sometimes more like whispering.

My center strips on Sunday ight or Monday orning. Oils before every league.
No stripping allowed. I bowl on Thursday 2nd shift, following a physically challenged league, using plastic with ball ramps. Makes for an interesting evening.

The laneman doesn't understand why a "good bowler", can't just adjust?

I know 3 teams that are leaving next year.

They strip and oil once a day in the morning.  That being considered the conditions we get for league are actually pretty good.  Backends are pretty fresh, and the oil doesn't seem to move around much.  The only time I have problems is when the high school team bowls before we do.  It's either bone dry after that, or the backends are too sloppy to get a good look.  I think they tried to fix the problem last week by putting out more oil in the morning.  Then the high schoolers came in and blew up the middle.  Left us with a reverse block feel to the pattern, and really threw a bunch of guys off.

Where I bowl they usually (but not always) strip them Thursday night and maybe once or twice more during the week.  The lanes are oiled first thing after they strip, then again right before each league.  Since it is a small house they can't block off lanes for the leagues so depending on how much open bowling is done during the day Friday, we might have a fresh shot in my Friday night league or we might have who knows what.  A lot of people complain about the conditions but as long as everyone has to bowl on the same conditions I don't really mind.  My only real complaint is that there are some employees who bowl in the Friday night league and it seems as if the lanes they are scheduled to bowl on never get any open bowling during the day Friday which means that they get a fresh shot almost every week while everyone else gets the luck of the draw.  Another fun thing is when you get to the lanes and they have oiled the lanes for the league then someone comes in and bowls a couple of games right before the league starts and they don't re-oil.  That always makes for a fun night

I bowl in leagues where a specific conditon is required. We,by league rule, are given a fresh shot before league starts. This was negotiated with the house and is in our contract. The lanes are oiled just before league starts or prior and nobody is allowed on.

An interesting side effect is there is a devoted group of bowlers(mostly young) who come in to open bowl when we are done to experience the tougher conditions. Many of them intend to join the Sport,Classic or tough shot league but want to gain experience in practice first.

I don't care how hard the shot is but I do insist the shot be the same for everyone. If thats not possible I'm not interested in giving them my money.
