How to build bowling ball rack
« on: September 30, 2008, 04:30:57 AM »
Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone had instructions on how to build a 3 shelf bowling ball rack.  I know I saw it on here awhile back but forgot to save the instructions.  I did a search but came up with nothing.  Thanks for your help.

I found a heavy duty chrome shelving unit with 4 shelves (each hold up to 300 pounds) at Home Depot for around $60. I use ball cups and can fit 5 balls per shelf. Very sturdy and cost effective. Ball cups are less than $2 each.

1) Shop at Lowe's - Let's build something together!  (I work at Lowe's)

2) But it feels so good to spend $110 and build it yourself!!  You get to pound your chest and make gorilla sounds!!!  Ohhh Ohhh!!

Mike,
I actually go out of my way to shop Lowe's over Home Depot, but back when I did this I wasn't too familiar with Lowe's, and the stark contrast I'd experience between the two.

I built a rack for my garage. My garage stays fairly warm during the winter as it is insulated, and I have never had a ball crack. Its a few pieces of 2 inch think wood and electrical conduit. Its not the most pretty thing, but for the garage its great. If you want more details I can sent them.

I'm wish my garage had a constant temperature that would solve so many problems.  We will just say i'm envious.

I threw together a quickie ball rack in my basement based on a set of shelves that I had to tear down.  I'm in the process of building one that's nicer, but it's heavily 'New Yankee Workshop' influenced, and although I have the plans I've created for it, I don't imagine that most would attempt to duplicate them.

I've emailed my plans to about 5 people in the last 2 days. It holds 20 balls and is less then $20 to make. Takes just a few hours to assemble. If anybody else wants these plans, just PM me your email and I will send them.

Love to see this if you have a picture. Also curious if the unit is still available. Size would also be interesting! I have a few EBONITE sold racks and balls also on the floor that my wife doesn't like .. have to get more storage area! Thanks!

Joe,
Here's a link to a picture. It looks like they are now black instead of chrome color. The store had a shorter 4 shelf version that I bought for less money. Hopefully the link works.

Yeah, you should spend no more than about $70 to build your racks.

I built two 20 ball racks, both as solid as can be, using a bunch of 2 x 4's and a 2 x 8's, along with 7"x 4"x.75" dividers.

it's not hard to do at all.
