How to fix deep cuts in ball?
« on: November 28, 2006, 09:11:19 AM »
I just got a ball from a guy off here, and i believe UPS was really rough with my ball that put a 1 and 1/4 inch long, by 1/8 inch deep cut in my ball somehow, because it wasn't on the ball in the pictures I saw from the seller.

I just want some advise on what you can do or have a pro shop expert do to take that ugly chunk out of it. ANy help would be appreciated.

A friend fixed a chip in hes ball with super glue, so i guess it would work for you.

Don't try fixing it yourself.  If you use Superglue you also need the accellerant to quick dry it.  Its also likely you will end up getting superglue all over the ball.  Then you need to file it down without making a flat spot.  Then the area needs to be brought up to whatever cover condition the rest of the ball is at.

Is it possible that the ball in the picture you saw is not the ball you received?  Did you match up serial numbers?  I can't imagine UPS putting a gash in a bowling ball that's boxed for shipping.

The problem with gashes like that is that the filler material doesn’t really have anything good to hang onto. Often when you fill them it will eventually fall out unless you drill it out.

Unless it is in the track I would not worry about it.

But you can try and fill it with plug material. Then that area would need to have a router run, filed down and smoothed.

When repairing, we wil usually drill out the bad area,
and plug it with plugging material, the drilling out will
solidify the repair, and when applicable, color match as
well as we can. We then cut the plug and resurface to
box finish, or what the customer had. There should be
no problem bringing to the local pro shop !

On small scratches and nicks, super glue can be helpful. On larger chips, I made evry good experience with a model kit 2 component epoxy putty from Tamiya. High quality stuff, easy to handle, bonds well with a resin surfaceand fits very well into the surface hardness of a bowling ball. The only drawback is that its color will stand out most of the time - it is available in a light ochre and a light green (has a longer open time to manipulate it).

I used it on my Blade Particle which had a bad nick in the size of a dime in the track area - and so far, the filler has not come off.

I've taken a bevel knife and used the tip of it to scrape out and smooth the cut and give the plug material something to adhere to. Then I will plug it with clear. If finished off properly, you really have to look hard to find the repaired area afterwards.
