If you had to choose a benchmark ball for league...

whether on wood or synthetic, solid or pearl, what ball would you use?

For me, it would be a Sure Fire.

right now its my inertia because it reads the pattern very well and is smooth. i would probably for me considering im pretty low rev, i would pick something like the glad solid, amf heist, amf code, track temper.

Im so glad people are brainwashed to think that TRACK sucks. And its even funnier when im carrying with my TRACK ball and they're going flat ten with their BRUNSWICK ball.

It's funny to hear someone say a benchmark ball is this or isn't that.  A benchmark ball is the ball that you choose to use to see how the lanes are playing and make decisions on what piece you want to use.

If you throw a white dot as your benchmark, how can anyone say it's wrong?

What's up with all the elitist attitude around here?  If someone says a ball is their benchmark, then it's their benchmark.

Like I said, I use my Black Widow to see how the lanes are playing, and go from there, but somehow I'm sure that is wrong.

John,

But, no, and that is the point. It is not with respect to what he bowls on regularly. It is a ball that gives an arc-ing motion with a medium hook and a mediun backend on medium oil AND one that he/she knows well enough to use to read completely unknown lanes and their oil pattern.

That is the basic definition of a benchmark ball, as far as I have learned. It is NOT the ball that works best on your home lanes and its "wall of china".

All too often the ball many use on their THS is a skid/flip pearl. That ball cannot be used to get a read on unknown lanes on an unknown oil pattern.

It's not an elitist attitude. It's a basic bowling definition.

It's not good or bad it just is.

Charlest, would you say a Sidewinder would be a good benchmark? Yes it has pearl but also has particle. For me, the Sidewinder is very smooth with no snap whatsoever. Not saying it's my benchmark, but this is possibly the type of ball you are referring to.

Original Black Nighthawk.

Honestly, any mild reactive with an Rg around 2.5 and diff around .04 and solid (no pearl) cover has been a terriffic THS ball. It gives you some length, doesn't jump right away when friction is creeping up from the burn, and is not a hockey stick type backend reaction, thus you have more control than the high diff stuff or the pearl/shiny stuff.

Such as:

Hammer Blade Reactive
AMF Nighthawk
AMF Villain
Brunswick Copperhead
Visionary Gladiator
Brunswick Wizard
Brunswick Nemesis
Storm Street Rod
Roto Grip Grand Illusion
Track Kinetic Energy

Make no mistake about it, the manufacturers know these numbers in general give great ball reaction

and the list surely goes on and on, those are just to name a few and all of them work great on a THS.

Purple Vibe, not even a doubt. I can go straight up the 5 board, or from 5th arrow to the ditch and back. This ball flat out works on everything for me.

Benchmark equals reasonably versatile---while giving you a good idea of whats going on with the pattern. For me, Classic Zone.

This is the best definition of a benchmark ball on this thread so far.. Mine was my Absolute Inferno @ 1000 with somewhat of a control drilling. I really wish I still had that ball!

My benchmark ball is my Vendetta Particle Pearl, at the moment. If it's not enough, or too much, it lets me know quickly. And sometimes, it's just the right ball.
