whether on wood or synthetic, solid or pearl, what ball would you use?

For me, it would be a Sure Fire.

I don't think you would want a pearl as a benchmark ball, I definitly think it would be a solid and although I don't have one I think the suggestion of the XSPower would be a good one and priced reasonably. Go onto Buddies web site and watch the video on that ball it is very smooth

Even with what my Kinetic Energy has been doing for me lately, My benchmark is still my Power Machine.

Yes it's pearl, and it works for me very well.

I'd say Rival, assuming you don't know the condition.  I have one but it's not the first ball out simply because it's my strongest ball and I normally don't need something that strong for conditions around here.  However, once in a while it's my best option and is definitely nice to have when the time comes.

Well I will always start with my Black Widow.  Not a benchmark persay, but I built my arsenal around it, so that is what I always start with.

A benchmark ball is not the ball with which you start you're league. That does not make it a benchmark ball.

Point noted...

But I would think that while a benchmark ball may not have the optimum carry percentage or room for error on some of these wide open house shots I hear about, it'd still do a darn good job of knocking pins down.

I don't have an established benchmark ball at the moment since I'm a little out of touch with my assortment of equipment, but I like to bring a 2000 Abralon surfaced solid or particle pearl with me most nights unless I know the lanes are "dry"
