Increasing ball weight??
« on: November 13, 2003, 01:01:28 PM »
I am currently using 14lb equipment, and wish to take it up to 15lb (pick up the occasional 7 pin on my strike shot.. just hopeing, i've read that it can pick your average up between 5 and 10 pins...Hmmm... Love to read your thoughts on this one.) Anyway my question, which is now my second question is if I were to get an all round 15lb ball that is to be used as my strike ball, do I then need to purchase a 15 lb plastic ball for my spares??? Or can you get used to the diference in weight between balls (15lb strike-14lb spare ball), even if there is only a very subtle one at best.
Basically, what would you do??????
I would appreciate your views on this one.

I moved from 16# to 15# because of arthritis.  Until I converted everything to 15#, I switched back and forth.  If I started the night with 16#, then moved to 15#, it was fine.  If I needed my 16# later in the set, it felt really heavy.  Some people can switch weights easily, others can't.  A few people like a lighter spare ball so they can throw it a little harder.  I personally would keep everything the same.  See what weight works best for you, then get everything in that weight as time and money allows.  Your timing will be more consistent if you stick with one weight.

Thanks for the replies. Ok, XFactorReloaded,Im reading material re enrty angles and stuff, so I'm working at it. I guess that when I come in a bit light into the pocket, I was hopeing that with a slighly heavier ball I might be able to pick up the 7 pin as well, basically a freebie on  an average shot every now and then???? Whether this is true or not, I don't know, just something a bowler told me a while ago.. Is this correct???

Strider (cool name mate, big fan of LOTR in particular the books, movies pretty reasonable though, though not Tolkien). I think as a league bowler, who doesn't bowl more than 10 games a week, at the moment anyway, I think a spare ball same weight as the strike ball would be the way to go, keep everything consistant...

Love an answer to the above mentioned question, re weight and cheap 7 pin pick ups on strike balls. Confused about that...

Although the difference between the way 14# to 16# hit is very small, conventional wisdom still suggests to throw the heaviest ball you can throw comfortably and consistently.  Lighter balls tend to rev a little faster, but deflect a bit more, so there is some tradeoff.  Certain balls will change the differential numbers when dropping in weight, so it helps to check the websites before buying a new ball.
