Is Easy Slide illegal?
« on: November 16, 2007, 02:06:29 AM »
I seen in another post that someone suggested that using easy slide on your shoe is illegel, is that so?  In the past I have used easy slide extensively to help me slide.  I injured both my legs in the first Gulf War causing significant damage to both my knees, ankles and calves.  I took about 30 pieces of shrapnel from a cluster bomb.  The only way I could even consider bowling is if I was able to slide with very little resistance or it would hurt like hell or I would end up doing a belly flop into the alley.  Nobody ever complained.  I am not currently using easy slide now as I have purchase a new pair of Dexter SST5 with the interchangeable heals and slide pads that enable me to slide pretty well.  Nonetheless, I still keep a bag of easy slide in my bag for emergencies.

we had this arise on weds night, bowler b on team 1 was applying easy slide liberally, bowler a on team 2 complained as it made the approach slippery for him. Sect. told bowler b he had to stop using at the approach or forefiet the game

Why not just buy a slide sock, that's what I use, and I never have a problem.

The problem with stuff like EZ Slide comes when some idiot decides that they need to be hitting the bottom of their shoe like the EZ Slide bag was a rosin bag.  It is the same caliber of idiot that thinks that because baby powder is cheaper, they will put a big mound of it on the floor or on a table top.  Then they track all of that crap into the pit and onto the approach.

If someone is outside of the pit and rubs a small quantity onto the sole of the shoe and the excess is off before they get into the pit and onto the approach, then there should be no issues.

I have patted easy slide lightly on the bottom of my shoe while standing at the back of the ball return, I then wiped then rubbed it in/off the slide sole, then under the ball return on the approach (where noone will step) I applied pressure and tried to slide to make sure my sticking problem didn't persist and continued to do so 3-4 times to make sure any residue was gone.

I have only had one person complain about this ever and that was at JOG nationals by a players mother (whom everyone said seemed to be causing trouble in every house), but even then the officials said that it was ok because I didnt directly step onto the approach or scatter debris everywhere.  None of the other bowlers seemed to mind either.

Before you slam people who use easy slide on their shoes because they accidentally stepped into spilled soda or whatever, depending on the moderation they use depends on whether it should be deemed unacceptable or not and to where they take care of the problem.  Its just as easy to blame people who slam their centerline with rosen bags then dont wipe it off then roll the ball down the lane, or throw their rosen bags from one hand to the other to get a big poof of it on their release hand.  Its still releases debris the same way just the opposite kind, but nobody ever complains about that stuff.  When somene see's a bag of easy slide its usually followed by a gasp of horror.

applying easy slide to your shoe and/or the approach is illegal. if i find out someone is using it on my pair they'll have to deal with me----it's my knees and back at stake. a simple way to avoid stepping in something and having to clean it off is to use a shoe cover everytime you leave the settee area.

The only argument you have here are the morons that "poof" their rosin all over the place because that can also be stepped in and alter sliding ability.  If you are worried about stepping in urine or pop or beer, then wear a shoe cover ALL THE TIME.  If you don't feel like bothering with it, then you better have a replacement heel and sole that match in case you do step in something.  I personally don't care if people rub the Easy Slide into their shoe real good and then rub their foot on the carpet to make sure it is all off before stepping on the approach.  Same thing with cigarette ashes.  I have absolutely lit into bowlers who splash the crap all over the ball return area.  Heck I fell twice this week alone because of some dolt that put it under the ball return "where noone will step."  The stuff has no place in the bowlers area, period.

Again, re-read the rule.  Applying it to your shoe is not necessarily illegal.  It's only illegal when you apply enough that it affects the approach for the next bowler -- "detracts from the possibility of other players having normal conditions."  If using easy slide on your foot, one should only use a very small amount, and then rub it clean with a brush, a towel, etc., or after applying a small amount, he might rub his or her foot underneath the ball return -- this will get excess powder off the shoe so that it does not stay on the approach.  Therefore, the person is not changing the approach conditions for everyone else.  Placing large amounts of powder on the floor and then rubbing your foot in it however is NOT legal as it will leave enough powder on your shoe that it will affect the approach conditions for other bowlers.

Since there isn't a scientific way of know how much is 'enough' to possibly affect any of the bowlers around you, the answer is not to apply it to your shoes -- period.

It's not worth leaving residue on the approach and chancing someone getting hurt. There are too many other options (teflon pads, high slide interchangable heels/soles, etc.).

The bottom line is that common sense and courtesy says don't use it.

I have never had a problem with someone using Easy Slide, nor have I ever seen it have an effect on the approach. However when it comes to Baby Powder, especially those that dump it on the floor and then step in it before getting on the approach, that is another story as that does have an effect on the approach for everyone.

Well said! This isn't the 80's anymore. I hate it when people use that kind of stuff. I don't like to slide much and when I'm forced too because of people using substances, I hate it. I use a hard leather sole for my slide shoe on my Dynothane sole and love it as long as I wipe my sole off before I step on to the approach because of all the dirt and whatever.

This is THE problem with that rule: Some numbskull, some idiot, some moron tries to THINK and screws every one else. ALl that is necessary to stop someone using it PROPERLY is to have some idiot THINK that it is interfering with his slide. Then, according to the rule, the IDIOT can have the league executives prohibit that other person from using it and and from being able to slide and from, eventually, bowling, Which is what the IDIOT wanted in the first place.

And, NO!, fancy $200 shoes are not necessarily the answer.

And, YES! people are different and have different slides and need to do different things to achieve that goal in order to be able to bowl.

If everyone were  identical we would all average 145 or 225.

If that small amount of easy slide bothered you that much to fall, then yes I do have a right to thrash people who excessively use their rosen/rosen bags similar to you complaining for those that excessively use easy slide.  I am on the opposite end of the spectrum of you.  I do have interchangable soles (dexter SST7s) and I use the #8 sole with the #7 felt heel.

GUM was the cause for me to need to do work on my slide sole and someone either dropped it out of their mouth or spit it out IN the settee area..  I at the time didn't have another #8 with me and with the floors being buffed right before we started my #6 was too sticky. I used the #6 until I got the residue off my #8 sole and it was smooth, and then after checking with it back on the shoe it still stuck so I needed an aid.

I am somewhat of a planter and I liked the added slide that this sole and heel combination gives me because I don't slide much, and it helps me get the desired feel I want.  I have recently invested in spare heels and soles for the feel I like.  Using easy slide in situations like that and in moderation shouldnt be a problem.

With that said the amount of easy slide I have used on my slide sole and then rubbed in, and then test slid under the ball return hasn't ever caused anyone to fall, and if u stick your foot under the ball return (I mean the circle ones, not the Y shaped, or rectangle 2 row), then thats your choice but its not a typical place for a bowler to step.  If you went and stepped under there after knowing someone test slid easy slide because they had a sticking issue it sounds more to me like you were looking for an excuse to b**** rather than concentrating on bowling (similar to like what charlest said). Sorry..

If I see someone applying it in the bowlers area to their thumb, I will politely ask them to do it at the seating area just so there are no accidents.  The stuff goes everywhere and residue can easily end up on the floor and be stepped in.  Nothing wrong with that at all.  When I was talking about the guy that had it splashed under the ball return I meant he literally had a pile of it.  It wasn't like he put it on his shoe and wiped it off and then test-slid.  I obviously didn't notice it and thus me busting my arse twice before saying something.  Yeah I had a right to b**** at that point.  I don't say a word until I see a potential problem.  I'm polite about it.  I don't go crying to the league secretary.  Even after I fall I go straight to the source of the problem.  Basically, if you can't slide without a pile of Easy Slide, then you should try another sport.  I'm not saying that's the case with either you or Charlest.  Soles and heels help, but a slide sock may be needed.

It's illegal. I love all this justification from people who get their hand caught in the cookie jar, but it's illegal.

The problem is that the only way to tell that it becomes a problem for another bowler is when the other bowler trips and busts his a-double-s and then it's too late.

If I see someone using it, I politely ask them to stop and I tell them why. I'll offer my shoe brushes and some advice on how to condition their soles.

What happens at that point depends on their attitude. I've only reported one person to a league official before; she was a older female bowler in a mixed league who would hit her sole so much she'd form an EZ-slide cloud in the pit. One of her teammates fell following her on the lanes once and was out for a month, but she was the team captain so it wasn't like they could throw her off the team.

We were bowling on her pair, and my wife has a very iffy back. The first time I saw the cloud go up, I politely asked her not to do that. She responded by telling me she'd been doing it for 20 years and wasn't going to stop doing it that night. I said, "Yes ma'am, you are," and went straight to the league president.

She stared at my team for the rest of the night like she was going to kill us, but what are you going to do? She hardly walked fast enough to slide, anyway.

And, it's against the rules. I really don't need anything more than that.

Jess

I can understand that, and I don't typically use easy slide.  Its not something I do unless a problem occured in which I had to (like that ^). And the rarity of situations like that plus the little maintenance work those shoes require is probably why I didnt readily have a backup sole handy (which I do now). I have a bag with me though mainly for my thumb (only really use in tournament play).  And when I use it I stick my thumb in the bag.

I have bowled with people who take the easy slide bag out and slam it on the table to get a build up then scrape it into a pile and smear it on their thumb.  I can't stand that either (like you).  This particular person not only bowled in my league, but at one time bowled on my team, so I went and bought a $.99 pill container that snaps open and closed (about the size of an old rubber coin holder, and its not the day to day labelled kind its bigger) and put a small amount of baby powder in it and told him to put it in his pocket and use it when he needed it to not make a mess.  That solved the WHOLE problem because he can just pop the lid and put his hole thumb in the container and get as much as he wants.. I got the idea from Steve Jaros as I saw him with a similar deal on a telecast a while back.

Someone who abuses the substances like in your situation with it dumped in the floor and also similar situations where people do the same spilled on the table situation with rosen shouldn't be tolerated.  It's equally irking for those that like to slide vs those that don't.  Stuff gets spilled, or moved and it causes problems and I agree it should be punishable.  But use in moderation in my opinion is okay.
