Is Resurfacing a ball worth it???
« on: February 17, 2005, 07:37:19 AM »
I have a couple balls I believe need to be resurfaced. But, I am trying to decide if the 20 bucks per ball is worth??? I can prolly get a deal since I know the guy but I am just checking. Will I be able to feela  difference?

NO WAY!  Not worth it for $20!!!  Throw them away and buy a new $200+ ball that is sure to hook!!!

TIC, of course!

not true, resurfacing works. I resurfaced my sharp blade becasue it was oil soaked, and had a lot of track, and lost hitting power. I brought it to box condition and it works better than ever. Resurfacing is worth it, even if its 20$

I think I may resurface my revmaster. I love that ball, but shes getting old. I won a  $25 dollar certificate at a local tourny. So, I am gonna use 10 to plug and redrill a thumb on my new barrage I will see if he can use the rest to resruface the ball.

I am still open to more opinions though!!

I don't think my rev is dead yet. Still getting decent scores. Still moves and hits alright. But, I know its got lots of games, nicks, and tracking on it. I think I may give it a try if I can get a deal on it.

You guys are a bit slow...did you not see the "TIC"..."tongue in cheek"...sarcasm at its finest!

Of course you should resurface your ball, it will be almost like new.  Beats the heck out of spending $$$$$ on a new ball...

See if your pro-shop guy can put it though Ebonite's Hook Again system...it works wonders along with a resurface!  I'd say it's definitely worth the $20 (sigh, it's like $35CAD..so I bought a spinner so I can do it myself, lol; you Americans have it so cheap!)!

Getting too much a a track in your ball also causes thew ball to roll unevenly bumping along the lane.
Plusa the fact that even before yuo notice the track really getting worn in the ball the surface of the ball will gradually lose it's shine as the track wears down from friction changing how soon the ball starts to react to the lane surface.

Another good way to keep the ball in use longer between resurfacings is to be sure to keep it p[oilished at the grit level that you have been using it at.
As long as it is polished out of the box and you have been using it that way.

If it's a out of the box dull condition then that does not apply.

Eventually if tyuo do not keep polishing them all balls will wear down to apporx. a 600 grit surface in the track area.

If it's a ball you really like and have had success with then I'd say yes a resurface is worth it.
I know many people whop have shot honor scores with balls they have had resurfaced a number of times.

to revive a ball:

Hot water and dishwashing soap,
Bake it,
Hook It system, or
Resurface it

if you don't know what you're doing, let the proshop handle the last three.

In an old BTM I was reading while waiting on a ball to be drilled there was an interesting article about reviving old equipment via resurfacing and baking to remove oil for the cover.

Some stuff came back to life and some didn't.
It wasn't totally manufacturer specific either.
Bottom line was of the I forget how many balls they tried it with sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't.

I'm still a big fan of resurfacing if for nothing else getting the smoother roll and length back after the track area wears down in grit.

I'm with Z-Man -- I'm still a big fan of resurfacing....I have done  it with a lot of balls and had good results --- for the price range you're indicating, I don't see where you can go wrong.  However, I have never had a second resurfacing done on any of my eqpt.......

You might review some of the posts on using that Ebonite "rejuvenator" system...as I recall, resurfacing the ball is part of the process when going that route.

BAKE A BALL! Never....OMG! Someone has read "How to Kill Your Coverstock". Urethane could take it, but NO manufacturer recommends baking as a solution. $20 is excellent for a resurface especially if your pro shop has invested in a HAUS device and know how to use it.

hmmm...just baked a two-year-old Cherry Bomb in the proshop oven.  Reaction came back, ball drives and carries again...hmmmm.
