Kids starter ball?
« on: November 09, 2005, 07:36:11 AM »
I want to buy my son his first ball for Christmas.
He is eight years old, and looks like he has a tapeworm (8-10 lb ball MAX!).
This is his first year bowling. He has the 4-step approach down pat along with a nice swing. He just drops the ball most of the time because of the poor fit of an alley ball. What do you buy a young guy? Should I get him a cool viz-a-ball, or should we be thinking about a better ball? Any coaches out there care to respond?

being that's he's of such young age, i suggest either a track xception or rule delta 1.

Just Kidding Jon!

Seriously, a cool viz a ball would probably be great. you can find some great deals on them on ebay. I suggest a nascar viz a ball, but stay away from Jr., he's got a bad habit of hitting the walls this season!

see ya in a little bit!!!

If you're looking for a performance ball (i.e., not 3-piece plastic), look at Brunswick.  A lot of their equipment comes with a "real" core well below the 13-14# that many manufacturers do.  The drill sheets or tech sheets usually show the numbers for the lighter-weight balls.

Alternatively, some of Storm's balls have "lightweight" versions.  I'm not sure what kind of core they have in them, you might want to send an e-mail to Storm.

I've got a 14# black Power Groove that's pretty nice.  It was cheap and durable.  Not a bad first ball.  The reactive version comes in a variety of colors as well.

My 9 year old uses a 12# Power Groove Reactive. Works great for her. My 6 year old uses a 8# Viz A Ball.

At his age and weight, just get him a plastic ball.  Any plastic ball, pick one he likes the looks of.  Vis-a-balls are OK if you don't mind spending a lot of $$$ for a picture.  After a few games he'll forget the picture is even there.  --  JohnP

Keep in mind that if you want to spend 100+ for a viz a ball, thats great, but just know that in a year or 2, he may be ready for a new ball, and then you will have to do it all over again.

If that is your case, fine.  But if not, a simple plastic ball would be great (white dot, maxim, target zone, ETC)  Even the Disney/Warner brother s balls are good, and not as expensive as a VIZ

Any performance ball by any company does not start until 10#.

NOTE:  Most "coaches" teach a 1 pound for age.  So, he is 8, I wouldn't even consider anything about a 10lber.

As for the ball, hell let him pick it out.  It will probably make his day.

Good Luck,
Andrew

I'd go for a cool polyester... he's growing and will soon need more weight, therefore I would not spend too much money on a Viz-A-Ball.

I don't want it to sound like "money is no option", but considering what I have spent on my own equipment, I have no qualms about dropping a hundred bucks on what may be his most prized Christmas gift. With my job, I miss out on alot of the other parent/child events, so our Sunday bowling league is very special for both of us. I still cannot get over how stoked he is about bowling at his age. As for the ball, my main concern is surface. Is he better off just learning to throw a plastic and get it down the center of the lane, or will something like a Groove be better to play with? He does have a small natural hook already (even with a ball that does not fit him).

I would still recommend plastic for him, but if you want to go up a level, get a bottom line resin ball -- Power Grooves are great.  --  JohnP
