Looking for dry lane ball advice....
« on: February 20, 2005, 10:09:44 AM »
Greetings!

Ok, I'm a long time lurker (~ 1 yr) of this board, but this is
the first time I've decided to ask for some advice.

First, the needed info. I'm a moderate speed stroker with a combined 188
average (2 bowling houses). I can play pretty straight & outside to inside
with strong hook. I took about ten years off from bowling (college/grad
school) but really got back into it about 6 months ago. Rediscovered my
passion for the sport. I bowl at two houses one with normally dry to medium
synthetic lanes, the other is medium to oily natural wood. I ONLY (at the
moment) have a Storm X-Factor Ace (16#). Oh, I'm a righty.

I am averaging about 10-15 pins higher at the center with the natural wood
medium to oily conditions and really have no complaints about my game there.
This bowling center is run well and taken care of well with dedicated owners
but is the next town over. My problem exists with my local center which
often has (lately at least) very dry conditions. I'm struggling. I'm really
quite flexible in my bowling game so I am not married to any particular style
(ie straight versus strong hook). However, I usually play with a moderate
hook from inside sliding out to 5-6 boards from the right gutter, with a
long arc rather than a sharp backend.

I'm looking for advice and a dry lane ball recommendation.  I have no real
brand loyalty to speak of, but have been happy with some of the storm and
brunswick balls used in my past.

What ball for a dry synthetic lane?

The reason I ask this is because today at the dry lane center, my first game was
abysmal until I was able to make adjustments - but I was never really happy
with my game at all. I moved all over, left/right, threw straight, hooked
strongly, fast/slow.... finally discovered faster with about a 3 foot loft
was the way to bowl respectively.

I stayed around after and practiced some with a house ball (eek!) and was
shocked to find that I could spin the devil out of the ball and it would
essentially go down the lane without any hook.

Any ball and/or game advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

Dr. Joe

Power Grooves are inexpensive also...very controlled with that two-piece.
