lost interest.
« on: January 23, 2018, 02:21:30 PM »
I never thought I'd actually feel this way, but I'm no longer excited to head out and bowl. It's more to pass the time I guess. I bowl every other night for second shift and I'd rather be home and have the kid(s) with me more often. My other league is fun, but I don't care if I shoot 550 or 750.

I don't even watch bowling anymore since late last year. I used to watch old and current matches on youtube. Few weeks ago, I "unsubscribed" to all but one bowling related channels.

I returned to golf late last year, revamped my equipment, and I'd rather be golfing than bowling. I started loosing interest after reaching a goal I had set over the summer league. Which I had help with on the "easier" conditions at this one house I no longer bowl, unless I sub. It wasn't golf that helped lean my away from bowling, but just how bowling is now. It's just not exciting to me. Golf did have some influences, but I felt this way a month after leagues started. I had regrets.

Then there's this, seeing guys with lesser skill actually shoot really high scores. It used to not bother me, but it got me thinking and noticing many bowlers have their chest out like they can actually bowl. Same folks who refuse to bowl on harder conditions. Same folks who complain if it's too long or too short. Same folks who bitch and whine when they miss the 10 pin, but only bowl 3 games a week. It's a bit annoying.

I'm not burnt out and I will continue to bowl next season. Next season it'll be just one family league just to be with friends. But, it'll be a long while till I buy my next NIB - I'm good for the next 3 to 5 years, or longer.

Re-read your 4th paragraph.  Your fried.  Focus on the golf for a while and take a break.

There are so many activities in life that bring joy and excitement.  If it's golf, stamp collecting, or watching Netflix - go for it.  If bowling no longer excites you - put the ball down and do something else worthwhile.  Life is short, no need to waste it on something that doesn't stoke the fire.  I did that and have no regrets.

Now with that said, I'm having trouble with the part about other bowlers.  What do they have to do with your bowling? I understand there is a social aspect to bowling and that we don't live in a vacuum.  Is it one particular league that just straight up sucks?  Personally, I ignore the house hacks and live by the mantra "I don't bowl for competition, I bowl to be the best".

Agreed. Life and free time are too short to spend on activities that don’t excite you. If golf does it for you now, dive into it. This is the advice I give to any friend who gives me the “I’d rather golf” speech. To a man, they were all happier putting the bowling balls away, if only for a year or two. Good luck.

I hear you -- you are not alone my friend !

I am all about golf now.

I still enjoy bowling but I take it for what it is .... unless you are bowling at the highest levels on the tougher conditions, it isn't a game of skill anymore. I enjoy hanging with friends, shooting some big numbers from time to time and just chilling out.

League bowling ON A WALL is recreation, pure and simple.  If it was truly a game of skill, there would not be 5+ boards of area, hold inside, friction outside, and massive taper to cover up mistakes.  A game of skill would force competitors out of their comfort zones and require true shotmaking.  That hasn't happen in quite a long time.

You and just about every other bowler I talk to.  Even PDW I think likes golf more.  To each their own but bowling shouldn't be a chore that is for sure.

I may be toast....also in denial perhaps.

I've been working on my golf game almost everyday.. Goal is get down to mid/cap (15, or cut 8 strokes currently 23 in my return) by end of summer. And break 90 next week or two. :D So far after 4 rounds, averaging 94.3 and 2 putts.

Thanks. I was looking into haggin oaks. Rick Hamlin mentioned someone at Mather too.

Above, my poor attempt to draw, first time with a hybrid.

Below, I lost some 10 yards with my irons.

I hope you hit it straight, cause short and crooked makes golf very hard.

You probably want to work on making a little more aggressive pass at it.  Not much leg action in those swings.

I hit it straight most of the time or in play. Made 11 fairways with driver last weekend, but not long. It used to be driver 6,7,8,9 irons for second shot. Now, it's my woods and hybrids have become buddies. Favorite club right now is the 3 wood.

I'll work on it firing the lower body and increasing my SS while being in sync. lol tough....

I'll see how it goes this Sunday...

Few years ago I felt the same way about bowling and was down to only once a week during the winter 32 week season. Fell in love with golf too and with a lot of work and lessons broke 80 a couple times and had a hcp around 10 at its lowest. Feeling great about golf at that point then winter comes (live in CT) and go out the next season and game is ok but nothing like the previous season. Another year later game has deteriorated to now breaking 90 is the goal and keeping the hcp under 20 and I slowly lost my zeal for golf as it takes so much time (for me) and coaching to keep my game in shape that makes it a lot of fun. Still love golf because there are those holes or rounds that are awesome but they are infrequent but not consumed with golf any longer.  But my love for bowling has come back during that time because I realized just like golf if I put time in I generally do see results but I don't have to obsess to be a decent house hack bowler..... Both are great and both have their +/- , the one golf aspect that can't be beat is a beautiful day outside when the weather is great, the one bowling has is it can be done anytime day or night, good weather or bad.

I dropped mens league a few years ago and this year wife and I didn't even bowl in couples. I don't miss it 1 bit and I was bowling sometimes 5 nights a week. I've gone practice bowling about 6 times all season so far. That being said I might join a league next season. I still enjoy bowling but not the hassle of being committed to a league.
