low average bowlers with tons of equipment?!?!?
« on: November 18, 2005, 07:05:54 AM »
I have a small rant about this website.  I understand there are many bowlers on here that want to improve their game as do i.  im pretty much a lurker on the website i dont post a whole lot  little here and there i do sell stuff here from time to time, so not sure how this is going to be taken.  I read alot of the post everyday then sometimes i just click on the profile on most people just to get a little info.  Most of the time i see these profiles:

average 185 one houe
        178 other house
then see a list of balls a mile long

Do you really need that many bowling balls if you bowling on a wall of china?
i myself usually have 8  all the time but i bowl tournaments weekly 3  leagues a week 2 different centers thurs and fri  then a travel league tuesdays which is 30 different centers.

i do remember growing up starting bowling and i used to have 1 or 2 balls max but never much more than that until i averaged in the 210+ range and bowled more tournamnets.

Also i see about 5-10 posts a day asking about how 2 balls from different companies  most of the time they arent even released whats the point of that?

reading the rg and diff with cores shapes and coverstock is not exactly rocket science is it?

Not so sure how this will be taken but just a little rant about the website and fourm

There are a good many un-necessary things.  Every hobby has people who are collectors of as much as they can get, requardless of need or knowledge or ability.  The getting is as much a part of the fun as the doing.  I have no problem with the way anyone spends their money.  Well that is not exactly true, I am bothered by the way my wife spends our money on everything except bowling.

I actually have more and more balls, and am on that low average spectrum (170 or so).  The reason I have the number I do (only about 5 right now) is I am looking for that one ball that I feel the most comfortable throwing basically all the time.  I only every bring 2 + plastic or occasionally 3 + plastic to leagues and the same to tournaments.  I'm just in a ball "exploratory" phase.

I do have the same rant as you but, only when the situation arises that a clinic or camp is offered for like $50-$100 and these guys scoff saying its too much money. I guess its just a parallel to Bob Hanson's (+sawbones) statments.

This also makes me laugh in one respect and yes I can agree that its thier life/money so they can do what they like, but on the other hand it annoys me.

Why? Because I bowl with second hand shoes, wrist strap, roller bag, towels and other bits and pieces. The only balls that are not 2nd/3rd hand is my two cheapest (A plastic and a PG reactive for dry) and yest I still ave 200+ even though I bowl less than once a fortnight. It would be nice if people that had some skill/dedication had more money and those that have money to burn or use equipment to cover thier shortcomings had a bit less.
I would have got away with it if it was not for those pesky kids (Behind my lane) and those blasted 10 pins.

I come in to the alley with a wrist brace, a back brace, an ankle brace, a flak jacket for talking to liberals, a wig, 12 bowling balls, I have 7 other wrist braces hidden in my bag....3 types of tape, a bevel knife, a rasp, glue, finger inserts, sanding pads, polish, scotch brite pads.

3 new types of front tape inserts, 2 new types of rear tape inserts, custom thumbs, vinyl inserts and some balls drilled with no slugs or inserts for the thumbs.  Oval, power lifts, finger holes only... reactive, particle and The new non particle particles.

I have the lowest average in the league for a first game by 25 pins and I am the only switcher in league.  We get 2 to 3 practice balls a night and I usually take near 15 in tournament.

My average is 30 to 35 pins higher in tournies and the top lefty in our league asks me every week to be his partner in a 2nd game pot game doubles.

Wanna laugh?

REgards,

Luckylefty
PS there have been suggestions by the league that I come and bowl a game of practice before the league starts.  I told em I'd consider it if they paid, but I don't have to...they could give this old fat switcher some more practice balls.
PPS when my teams get to league playoffs I often come in and bowl a precompetition warmup game but it's a hassle.

Proud owner of a 140 first game average this year!  Don't bowl me the second two games though!  (two warm up balls in league..thanks proprietors)

Yes, some people have more equipment that others. Because afterall, good equipment is easier to find that a good, patient coach. If you have the money to spend on new equipment, then by all means, do so. Some people purchase new eqipment for different reasons, The shelf appeal, the smell (storm), lane conditions, or they saw or heard of someone else scoring high with a particular ball.

So basically your rant is just a rant. Simply put, just get it off of your chest. It would be the same as me ranting about all these fools driving around in their H2s when they spend 99% of the time on pavement.

It doesn't bother me, but I think it is funny or sad.  I guess I haven't decided which.

I bowled a colorama one time, this younger guy...early twenties.  He rolled in 6 for colorama!!  He used them all during that time, what I noticed were they were all "medium" condition balls and all drilled very similar.  He never moved just kept changing balls trying to strike.  I heard later that he averages about 195.  Maybe he was working on something, but i doubt it...funny stuff though.

I take my four ball bag to league. Maybe one or two more to tournaments. I carry a 206 average.

Great topic. No reason to be critical of anyone and their choices of doing what they do. They are supporting the bowling industry, something I don't do very well. I've been a high average bowler about 30 yrs (ouch), and have rarely bought more than 1 new ball a year. A few years haven't bought new at all. I love bowling, leagues, subbing, tournaments, some practice just for the heck of it. I learned to bowl in a different era where you had 1 ball, maybe 2, and had to make them work by changing releases, speed, loft, etc. Bowling has changed dramatically and equipment choices make a huge difference in being competitive. In general bowlers will get better if they learn to be more versatile, have an A game, B game, etc. but on typical modern conditions ball changes work just fine. Too many choices is bad for anyone though. And when you run into a condition when your weakest ball hooks at your feet or your strongest ball doesn't hook a board, that guy is toast.
