micro fiber towels

I have never used one and wondered exactly what the benefit of a micro fiber towel is. Is there a benefit using one of them as opposed to using a ball manufacturer's towel?

I am not even sure if I know what they are. Where can they be found?

Excaliber, they are much better than regular cotton towels to wipe off oil. They actually absorb the oil and dont spread it along the coverstock!! I bought mine at the local Stop and Shop. In the same aisle as the scotch brites and cleaning stuff, they had microfiber towels made by scotch brite. I think I paid a couple of bucks for it.

EXCALIBER, I got mine in the auto section at Wal Mart in the area of the car wash stuff, about $4.50 for two in a package.
 They do take the oil off better then a regular terry towel. I think the only thing that might be better is a towel called Cleanstrike.

I saw them in the Walmart auto section as stated by pnj1967 and also saw them at Target in the auto section.

Micro-fiber towels have a label indicating 70% polyester and 30% polyamide. There are other towels, also labeled "micro-fiber" that have a different make-up, different percentages. This is the one you want to buy. I bought mine at Walmart: 5 for $4.98.
One brand name was NicSand; I think their price was 2 for $3.98.
Size is approx 12" x 16".

Do not get the ones labeled 100% polyester; they clean wondefully but absorb terribly.

Do get the ones labeled 70% polyester and 30% polyamide.

Bought mine at Wal Mart. They came 2 to a package, a green one and a yellow one.

I highly recommend the micro-fiber towels for wiping the oil off of bowling balls.....they pick up more oil in one swipe than other cotton terry cloth towels will clean up all day long.  And, Charlest set you straight on the ones that you want (70% polyester, 30% polyamide), and it is the polyamide that sucks up the oil.  There are some out there that are only 15% polyamide, but you want the 30% ones.

Typically, the packaging will say "micro-fiber", and it often appears on the tags on the towels.  These micro-fiber towels typically contain some 90,000 fibers per square inch, and they have a grabby feel on the skin....if your hands are somewhat rough, the towels will stick to your hands.

Oh, as for taking care of the micro-fiber towels, the manufacturers recommend to machine wash them by themselves, and DO NOT use any type of fabric softener either in the washer or dryer.  Fabric softeners will greatly interfere with the ability of the micro-fiber towels picking up oil, so AVOID the softeners.

After reading this post I checked the ones I had in my bag. They were the 3m cleaning towels and they were working better rthan terry cloth towels but were on the small side so I swung by Walmart last night before league and used charlest's advice and picked up some of the 70-30 towels. The work so much better than the 3m ones. I got a pack of 5 for $5. Gave one to a teammate since he needs to learn to wipe off the ball anyway. Tried using one of the extra ones to clean the ball after league and my fingers were extremely sensitive afterwards. I could rally feel the particles in my SS Particle. Still even a little touchy this morning. I guess I'll use the 3m ones for cleaning.

The 3M are great for cleaning sensitive surfaces. Mine are so soft I can use them safely on eyeglasses and CDs (got to be very carefull with CDs and plastic eyeglass lens!)
However, the 3M ones that I have are 100% polyester; they do not absorb anything except a little water. That is their problem with being used for bowling. The ones with 15% polyamide are better; the ones with 30% polyamide (which is the material that absorbs) are perfect for bowling.

The micro-fiber towel are what the ball makers recommend, because they pick up more oil.  Columbia even put them in the box with the first ICON.  Now if I could only find 1 in the bowling size so I can stop leaving them all over the place.

I noticed how easy it was to get belt marks off when cleaning with the 3m clothes. I really had to scrub using the 70-30's to get belt marks off last night. But I was using Storm's Reacta Clean instead of Simple Green like I normally do. I was in the same room as my wife when I was cleaning and she can't stand the smell of the Simple Green. I will have to see how Simple Green works with the new towels, otherwise I'll just keep using the 3m ones.

A couple of weeks back, I saw a large micro-fiber towel in WalMart in the automotive section.  It was packaged with a wash mitt, and the micro-fiber towel was a nice 16" X 36" size.....however, the price tag for the wash mitt and towel combo was some $8, so I skipped on picking it up.  The smaller towels work just fine, although they aren't as large.

You should not see that difference in just the towels cleaning ability. SOme belt marks are much more difficult to get off than others. That ability is more in the liquid used, than in the towel. One of the best, if not the best for getting every mark off the ball is Tenth Frame's Ultra Clean. There never has been a tpye of mark that that cleaner would not remove - nothing.
