More crazy questions-shrinking slug and ball speeding up?
« on: March 24, 2012, 11:02:24 PM »
Some crazy stuff guy is saying his thumb slug is shrinking all the time. He has open it up every week. Says it shrank 1/16 since last week.

Also his ball speeds up going down the lane, he never throws over 15 mph, but the ball is going 21 mph at the pins. It only happens on dry lanes too!

I would think if the slug was shrinking it would pull away from the coverstock. Or if the slug was generating new mass by converting energy into matter the hole would close up or the ball is shrinking.

As for the ball going faster I figure well the lanes are dry, hes just throwing faster and dont know it or the lanes slope down hill.

Both are pretty much impossible....the latter is only possible if his revrate was higher than the relative ball speed.

Little known fact:  In Russian "Hope" and "Change" translate to "Tax" and "Spend"

Ball speeding up can occur - when you have a rev-dominant player, a flippy layout and a strong wet/dry condition.

Technically, the ball rotates in a different axis than its movement axis when it is released, skidding "forward" but rotating into a different direction. Flare means axis migration towards the PSA - and when there's still a lot of rotational energy left once the ball is in its hook phase or its end, both energies are added together, which makes the ball speed up on the back end, amking it look as if it would jump into the pins. I have a fellow bowler in my club who plays this way - tons of revs, and if he tosses a strong reactive it either literally gtoes sideways or makes a final dash! Very impressive!

Okay thats explains the ball speeding up. He says he has 400-500 revs on the ball.

As for the ever expanding thumb slug. The guy seen his pro shop guy at league yesterday and he said it was "moisture making it expand".

Moisture! I can see moisture causing you to hang up in a ball, but making a slug expand?

When I get a ball drilled the thumb slug is flush with the ball. I have had about 6 balls where the slug has shifted up out of the hole about a 1/16  and I have had to file it down level again. I have showed this to my Pro shop guy he had a puzzled look on his face and said your the only one who brought this to my attention. I have watched him drill and he sands the slug and glues it in so it should not shift.  All my equipment is never left in the car in Heat or cold and stored in a climate controlled shop at 64* in the winter and 75* in the summer

Any one else have this happen and do you know why.

Thanks

On a side note, concerning shrinking/expanding: I had two strange cases, both with Hammer balls. On a Particle Blade and a Vicious Strike, the pin would bulge outwards ever more, and on the VS even the thumb slug seemed to expand. Not a dramatic change, but when I refreshed the balls on a spinner I was surprised by the "hubble" I felt on the surface. Visually, the change was hard to detect, but you could feel it and hear it when the ball rolled over the hump. Sold both balls, So I cannot tell what became of the phenomenon, and I still can only guess that internal expanding of the filler caused this?
