Need a good solid for Nats.
« on: February 15, 2015, 05:15:43 PM »
First let me say I am open to any brand, but I want personal experience with the ball you would recommend.

But I was thinking of a IQ Nano, saw this ball in action just recently and was impressed. I don't carry a solid with me as I don't need it for the THS I see around here. But I know for a fact I will need one for Nats. Thanks.

Both the Nano and Gamebreaker 2 will be "solid" choices.  I am sure there are others.  But those 2 come to mind quickly.

I don't own the nano either but I am very impressed with its motion. Can't go wrong with any of the IQ series they some next level balls.

My Melee Cross will be going with me.  A solid cover that responds very well to surface changes AND it's symmetrical.

Covert Revolt.  That ball works very well on heavier THS and medium-heavy volume on sport patterns.  It takes surface changes very well and I really like how smooth it reacts off the spot.  You can easily play straighter or chase the oil left as needed.  Definitely a versatile ball.

It's very similar to the GB2 in the fact that it has a low RG core.

Seven, I would be patient for a few weeks b/c, I think, the pattern will be released in the coming weeks.  You may want to look at the graph and watch a few sessions, it could lead you to the right overall ball, that you could complement with layout and surface.

I know I'm going with my IQ Tour Pearl and likely my Tour X.....but I'm in the market for something later in the six game block.  Not sure what it will be but I will try to keep an eye on that.

That all being said, the Tour Nano looks really really good for a lot of styles.

If you're looking for a smooth solid, definitely consider Motiv's Forza. I love mine, when I can find enough head oil, that is. If I were going, I'd take it along for the fresh.

I have to second the Motiv Forza, I already know that will be going with me, very smooth, very powerful ball, already had a 297 in my Wednesday night league with it, and it's a great ball for tournament conditions too.  Lot of good choices out there, but the Forza is certainly one.

The first thing to consider in ball selection is that the patterns at Nationals are generally not heavy oil. They're flatter than most THS conditions, so they give the illusion of being heavier. The area around the 5-10 boards where most THS bowlers live is OOB at Nationals. You have to target the friction 40+ feet down lane and play tighter with a controlled reaction if you want to find any success.

There are no absolute rules for ball selection, but upper mid-range symmetric solids with 2000-3000 grit surfaces match up well. I had some success with a Columbia Disorder in the Open, as well as the side tournaments (BJ and BTM). Some of the other balls mentioned here (Covert Revolt, Forza, GB2, IQ Nano) fall into the same category.

A lot of bowlers fall into the trap of throwing their favorite Asymmetric hook monster at 1000 grit. Before you know it, they blow open the mid-lane, messing up the shot for themselves and everyone else on the pair.

Trust your ability to repeat shots without trying to create a lot of area. Select a ball that helps you achieve this objective.

I have not bowled Nationals in years, but from what I remember, I would agree with Steven.

Hey Steven do you think the Aura Paranormal would be a good fit for Nationals? Solid, but Assymetric... I also have a Motiv Jackal, but is a pearl and also Assymetric. Whould those too be a good fit from what you've seen?
