new USBC dress code
« on: April 06, 2007, 03:53:54 AM »
Before you think this is a crazy idea, what if there was a dress code that was similar to what most local tournaments have but mabey not quite as strict as the PBA.

Men would have to wear slacks (that would be PBA rules) but would also be allowed to wear nice cotton or polyestor pants. No jeans, sweats and definitly no shorts allowed.

Shirts must have a collar on it tucked in unless a button down shirt which does not require being tucked in. Tshirts may be worn but must not have any designs on them unless bowling attire.

Must wear a belt, no hats of any kind. Hair must be groomed if you have hair.

What do you think? If your in any sanctioned league or tournament by USBC, you must follow these new rules

Except for jeans and the stricter limitatiotn on shirts; I think it should be polos or mocks.

Try the no shorts rule in Oklahoma in the middle of summer, and the bowling alleys here get very hot inside even with the AC running.

give me a break....I work in the same town that I bowl in, BUT I live 40 miles away.  Now there is no way I am going to drive home, shower, change clothes, and drive back.  First of all I couldn't afford it, secondly I coudln't make it in time.  Now I don't always work in the office, so I do wear jeans, and a hat.

Would you be TRYING to kill league bowling?  Because that's just what you'd do.  We'd all have to start driving hours away just to find a center that still ran leagues.

Mr. Lebowski, this is Bill Salnicker with the Southern Cal Bowling League, and I just got a, an informal report, that a member of your team, uh, Walter Sobchak, drew a firearm during league play. If this is true of course, it contravenes a number of the league's by-laws, and article 27 of the league...

I agree with Hawkeye.  Bowling is already losing members annually.  With the removal of most awards as of August 1st, this would probably be the final blow.  Most league bolers I know who are not at the elite level (PBA Regionals etc) would not follow such a dress code and would join unsanctioned leagues or just open play or quit the sport.

Many league bowlers never enter a tournament in their entire bowling life.  I try to get teams together for our City, State, and Nationals tournaments and it is nearly impossible.  This year I couldn't find 3 ladies willing to bowl city.

I understand where you are coming from and at least on leagues, I don't think it's a good idea.  What about the people who may work until 6-6:30 or just don't have the time to change before league.  It won't be that big of a deal for me because I wear slacks and either a polo or button up shirt to work anyway (and because of how far I drive to get to league, I wear those to bowl as well).  I can see it in tournaments, but at least for me, its a chance to wear jeans to bowl at least in the local ones.  Granted, they're a nice pair of jeans, and I usually wear a decent shirt as well.  But personally, I don't mind if I see somebody wearing shorts and a t-shirt in league, or most tournaments.  As long as they fit and don't have a bunch of holes in them, I don't see an issue.

This would not fly in any of the leagues in my area.  This would definitely turn league bowlers away.  Most are in it for the fun.  They don't want to be told what to wear.

I don't know about you guys, but if I see someone wearing a t-shirt and he changes into a polo, I automatically gain tons of respect for him.  Isn't that how we base respect, off of clothes?  Not character or personality or some other bull****.

Personally i think it is an unrealistic goal to have anyone think this is a good idea. For me, if i was an outsider thinking of coming into the bowling world, id have to buy new clothes just to bowl in. For many people in leagues they bowl to have fun, and i feel that for many dressing like this would kill the fun.

On the other hand, i do wear polo/mock shirts and kacki pants every single time i bowl league and tournament. For league its because i go to work right after, and for tournaments its to look professional and put on an intimidation factor.

I think groups can put in some rules to deal with this.  Our city tourney allows jeans but no hats, and shirts have to have collars.  The rules says clothes must be generally in good shape, and must not offend anyone.  Easy rule, but let's the tourney director make the decissions.  On a side note, most of the guys in our league dress nice, but there are a couple of women that need to call Jenny Craig, or else cover up their fat belly.  Short shirts, and tight pants are only to be worn by a certain body type, and if you can't bend over and touch your toes you don't have that body type.

I wouldn't bowl. Bowling is a sport, and I get hot and sweaty during the summer. Maybe slacks during winter, that might be fine. We don't see basketball players running around in slacks, do we?
