Many people don't even dress like that for church anymore...why should they for bowling?
Yeah I want to wear a nice shirt/slacks every week so I can sit in something someone left in a chair, get lane dressing/dirt on that nice shirt etc.
If you think snappy dress = higher participation why isn't everyone out playing polo or cricket at their local clubs?
I wish people would get over the idea that the old blue collar rep of bowling is what's hurting it. NASCAR had/still has the old blue collar/redneck rep and it's not hurting them any. Sure it's not like it was but that was because of the influx and demographic changes not because of anything NASCAR did (they were gaining huge growth before they made moves like dropping Winston). What hurts is not embracing what you have for the fun that it is.
You had the rise of all things retro not too long ago and instead of promoting classic family fun for all ages, bowling decided to promote high-tech this and that and stuffy dressed peoples in their advertisements. Smart move...
If there was anything like image that hurts bowling I'd think it would be the architecture. Old centers never look like they are open and have some of the worst parking lots I've ever seen, and due to light issues all but the newest look like warehouses or strip clubs from the outside. Slap some fun neon signage etc on the outside and brighten the places up so it appears as if something fun is going on inside.

our indiana state bowling tourney is a joke, that last 3 years after i bowled i have written letters to the powers that be complaining aobut the red neck looking tourney they put on, and people wonder why bowlers/leagues have such a bad rap
This is the bowling attitude problem that stifles growth. Instead of having fun with a live and let live philosophy you expend energy to write a letter and complain about someone elses dress? Said rednecks money spends just as well as yours. Drop the elitist attitude and have fun, or go find a country club that has their own lanes.
Bad raps come from attitude not dress.
