new USBC dress code
« on: April 06, 2007, 03:53:54 AM »
Before you think this is a crazy idea, what if there was a dress code that was similar to what most local tournaments have but mabey not quite as strict as the PBA.

Men would have to wear slacks (that would be PBA rules) but would also be allowed to wear nice cotton or polyestor pants. No jeans, sweats and definitly no shorts allowed.

Shirts must have a collar on it tucked in unless a button down shirt which does not require being tucked in. Tshirts may be worn but must not have any designs on them unless bowling attire.

Must wear a belt, no hats of any kind. Hair must be groomed if you have hair.

What do you think? If your in any sanctioned league or tournament by USBC, you must follow these new rules

It will never happen. They would lose tons of bowlers. Here in TX its short weather year round and alot of guys never wear slacks when they bowl.

If they did this, league bowling would suffer more and the way it is now, they can't afford to lose anyone else for any reason..

On a personal note, I see no reason for a rule like this in league play..

First, if you've ever seen Jim in shorts, you'd understand why this could be a good rule!!

On a more serious note, I wear shorts even in 20 degree weather....and rarely a coat.  What makes you think I'd be caught wearing slacks....I have a hard enough time wanting to wear jeans to bowling.

I don't mind wearing jeans and don't see an issue with some rules, like no tank tops or something like that, but these leagues may not be too competetive.  If relaxing leagues, why bother?

Dress code probably wouldn't fly BUT...

Enforce a hygiene code! I can say that a lot of people I bowl with either:

A. Do not use deodorant (Yuck!)
B. Don't shower (Again, not pleasant if s/he walks by you when you are in the middle of your backswing)
C. Do not brush their teeth OR at least chew mint gum.
D. Go commando so when they get down in their slide, the grand canyon is visible from just behind the approach

This is probably the worst idea I have ever heard of.  I want to be comfortable and wear what I want to when I am just bowling league.  I go to have a good time and work on my game.  I can understand tournaments, but not league.  I am in the military and am told what to wear every day at work.  I don't want this in my hobby as well, unless they want to pay me as well.

It sounds good.  but i don't see it happening.   even golf has relaxed some of their dress codes.  especially in hot humid weather.  and we all know { around here }  that the air seldom works in the summer.  "their coming out to fix it"
"it's on"  "feels cool to me"  etc etc.

Wouldn't work.  Especially here in Hawaii.  People like to dress comfortably and t-shirts, board shorts and slippers are the norm.

League attendance would take a serious nose-dive if a dress code was implemented.

Tournaments - YES
League play - NO

What kind of reputation?

Most of my friends that don't bowl usually associate the dress with ugly, obnoxious, over-sized bowling shirts.

Many people don't even dress like that for church anymore...why should they for bowling?

Yeah I want to wear a nice shirt/slacks every week so I can sit in something someone left in a chair, get lane dressing/dirt on that nice shirt etc.

If you think snappy dress = higher participation why isn't everyone out playing polo or cricket at their local clubs?

I wish people would get over the idea that the old blue collar rep of bowling is what's hurting it. NASCAR had/still has the old blue collar/redneck rep and it's not hurting them any. Sure it's not like it was but that was because of the influx and demographic changes not because of anything NASCAR did (they were gaining huge growth before they made moves like dropping Winston). What hurts is not embracing what you have for the fun that it is.

You had the rise of all things retro not too long ago and instead of promoting classic family fun for all ages, bowling decided to promote high-tech this and that and stuffy dressed peoples in their advertisements. Smart move...

If there was anything like image that hurts bowling I'd think it would be the architecture. Old centers never look like they are open and have some of the worst parking lots I've ever seen, and due to light issues all but the newest look like warehouses or strip clubs from the outside. Slap some fun neon signage etc on the outside and brighten the places up so it appears as if something fun is going on inside.

quote:
our indiana state bowling tourney is a joke, that last 3 years after i bowled i have written letters to the powers that be complaining aobut the red neck looking tourney they put on, and people wonder why bowlers/leagues have such a bad rap

This is the bowling attitude problem that stifles growth. Instead of having fun with a live and let live philosophy you expend energy to write a letter and complain about someone elses dress? Said rednecks money spends just as well as yours. Drop the elitist attitude and have fun, or go find a country club that has their own lanes.

Bad raps come from attitude not dress.

I can understand where everyone is coming from, but think logically.  I would say that a LARGE percentage of the people that go to league from work, and for the most part, I would say that most people are "presentable" while at work. If you go to work in slacks and a long sleeved shirt and a tie, you are definitely chnging before you go to work.  Is it hard to bring a collared shirt with you?  But that's besides the point.  I think that the original poster was trying to alleviate people running around in sports jerseys that are 5 sizes too large, t-shirts with vulgar statements, or something that is less than proper.  No, we don't have to show up in a three piece suit, but let's atleast make ourselves presentable.  I bowl in a Majors league that requires a collared shirt every night of bowling.  Fines are imposed if this rule is not followed.  The same goes for hat wearing. I TOTALLY agree for this rule to be imposed on tournament play.

Why does everyone try to make it harder than it really is?  Overthinking makes the game that much more difficult.

Amen Express. You (and some others) are starting to get the point of what I'd like to see acomplished. I also applaud your league that is doing this already.Alot of this I am proposing is the future reputation of bowling. If we lose some members, then so be it. It may be good for the sport. I don't see one thing I said that is so painful to wear, my God. I realize not everyone works in a simi buiness casual worksite. Some wear exactly what I was proposing in the rules, some wear jeans and tshirts and some wear uniforms and some wear full on suit and ties. Bring a change of clothing.

Someone earlier mentioned the fact that other "professional sports" dont do this.  Basketball players dont play in shirts and ties.  Correct, but they are now mandated to dress presentable.  No longer are they allowed to run around in tshirts and look like thugs.  It's all about presentation.  Fine, don't bowl in slacks, wear shorts if you want (I do wear them because of comfort), but dress presentably.  Khaki shorts or something of the like.  Maybe we don't create a rule making sure that everyone is clean and pressed, but show some respect to yourself, your teammates, the league, and the sport that you represent.

I go home and change into shorts and my team shirt, which is collared, I have to wear a collared shirt and jeans or khaki's at work.  like I said before you'll always bowl better when your comfy.  having sweat dripping from my head after 2 games is not comfy.  I don't have a problem with it in tourny's, but in leagues.  My shorts are khaki's so its not like I wear shorts all tatterd and dirty.  Maybe a rule saying your clothes have to be clean would be nice.

I think banning shorts is stupid. People still wear nice shorts, golf courses dont ban shorts, but they do ask you not to wear nasty ones. I think a dress code would be nice but it wont happen for leagues. Now i have bowled in leagues that had them and on teams that had them, but it was your choice to join that.
Myself i love to wear shorts and a nice shirt to bowl, but there are times i wear a T-shirt also.

there are exceptions to every rule, I for one do not see an issue with shorts/collared shirt or a team mock style shirt, what i do see a problem with is the atletic shorts/sweats/cutoffs.  how hard is it ot wear a repectible pair of shorts, I do it in the early months late months of league and all during my summer league, tournament play, no no shorts allowed.  as i stated if you start this at the junior level as these guys/gals come up, dress code is easy, heck most of todays kids have a dress code at public schools anyway, so for them this is a way of life

self pride people, I dont see taht as an issue with the users of this board, but i sure have my share in league the cutoffs, the wife beater shirts, shirts with holes in them, I just dont get it, you are in public, take a little pride in your appearance

plus chicks dig the sharp dressed guy lol
