Now or then?
« on: August 11, 2003, 08:55:47 AM »
Question for everyone. Were you having more fun with bowling when you first started, when getting a X was a big thing, when 200 was a rare occurence, or are you having more fun now when you shoot 200's more regularly, and X's are expected and arnt all that much of a big deal?

Myself i loved the game when i was terrible at it (when i was about 9), i had an average of 80 odd, couldnt bowl anything over 140, and i LOVED every moment of it. But i found my enjoyment level decreased seemingly with every pin my average went up, right up until the stage where i was averaging 200, and started to hate the sport.

Now i stopped bowling for a matter of 5-6 months, went and had a bowl, couldnt break 150 to save myself, and had a blast trying to do so....maybe its just me, but do we as humans loose the enjoyment of things once we become good at them?

Good luck and high scoring

As your average goes up you have higher expectations. It does take away from the game, atleast for me. Do not get me wrong, I love bowling. But many times I wish I was the 160 average guy that is just carefree when I throw the ball.

I still have as much fun as I ever have bowling but at times it does get frustrating when a spinner type bowler beats you.He will carry everything and you leave solid 9s or 10s.But I think thats why we all do it because we love it.When I see guys cursing and kicking the ball returns I just laugh now and think the ball just went where you rolled it.Could you imagine if some guys families were dependent on them bowling good?

I am having more fun bowling this year than I ever had in the previous 24 years.  I think it is the result of hitting a major low the previous 2 years and getting the coaching I needed to get my game back.  I have a level of confidence I never had before and a much improved attitude towards bowling.  Thanks Eddie for making bowling fun again

Coming from someone that had a rough childhood, I am having much more fun now than back then.  Bowling was and still is the one thing I do that people actually treat me like a human being and look up to me.  I was always getting bullied around school because I was always the smallest kid in my class.  I was 4 foot 9, 90 pounds in the 9th grade for Christs sake!!  When I became competitive at bowling, people started treating me like I was somebody.  Having some sense of popularity gives me an ego boost that I never had while growing up.  It means alot to me to be able to walk into a center on any given night and being able to feel included with what is going on whether someone asks me to sub or just even practice a few games.

Me,

When I was a kid,I busted my buns trying to get that first 200,that was with a
back up ball!!I never got a 200 game until I switched to finger tip.Well,it was
super fun trying though.

Also getting 3 strikes or more was a huge high!!!When I got "X's" of 3,4,even 7
(this is my jr days)It soooo neato,it still feels neato today!

Ok,well not now cause I'm in my garage typing this on my computer
to the BR forum right now!!!Hey!I'll be on those lanes tonight around
9pm ,and its SPORT SHOT night(I'm yelling out loud this in a ECHO chamber,LOL!!!)but you cannot hear me on your computer!!

Hail Ya!!!I still like to have fun,I always TRY(aka DO my DARNDEST)
to get a big 3-0-0,on any house condition!!Everyone here knows the
perfecto game is kinda tricky to get.I couldn't resist typing that!
I always try for that or whatever impressive high 275 plus is always
neato!!!

Its all good!!Even when you bowl bad,I thunk?

Um,hmmm,hannnn,ur,a,aaa,but I'll always settle for a lil' 2-hundred something.
A 203 or even a 242 is ok,not average,just one single game,LMORRL!!

I'm not very picky,a score is a score.

My "TEENY" goal I make is to get at LEAST "1" 200 game on any night/day!Thats for my right hand.As for "emergency" left hand a 150 is very cool(minimum of coarse),we all wanna bowl kinda better!!!

If I have an off night/day I dont care I have another back up policy.

Its never give until your TOTALY tired,no matter how good or bad ya bowl. Also
as long as you're there bowling, for example you pay for 6 games and the first
two kinda sucked.Well, that leaves you with 4 more games to improve on.

Meaning that when I bowl a 153 for example,MY BACK UP is to bowl a 154 or better!Whether its changing a ball or lane adjusting, experimenting is way cool!

Ok,this odd and unusual method works wonders for me.It take scores to an interesting level!Another words, sucky scores can be unsucky the next game,IKIKLOLBIRSBIHTTI!!!!

This bowling thing in general is cool, its gets you away from this computer and whatever anyone does in a job(aka robot drony repetition competition).

If I left anything out I'll type it on another post!

Moral to this post;Bowling is cool, keep doin' it!!

Anybody ever go to a new house where nobody knows you and rent the shoes and pick a houseball to throw?  My wife and I were on vacation earlier this year, and we found this little dive of an alley and did just that.  It was quite challenging to throw a ball that didn't fit quite right on lanes that were not oiled quite right (heads were in the worst shape of any I've seen for years!).  I had a blast, and walked away satisfied with my 156 first game and 185-188 last 2.  I'd never be able to bowl like that and have fun in a league!

9,

i kinda know how that feels. I went to malaysia for a holiday, and the place i was staying had a bowling alley in it! Anyway, most of the play they get there is social, and i just got a ball drilled that day, didnt take any over there of course, and with the cheap prices over there, how could i resist buying one?! Anyway, i rocked up at 1 in the morning(which doesnt feel that late over there, the place is always alive with activity)!! and to my suprise i had to wait a further hour just to get a lane.

When i got a lane i carved up on the condition, i was shooting the lights out with my new Vortex 3. By the time i had bowled a game i had near everyone in the center watching me and not concentrating on their own bowling. So at about 4 in the morning i stopped much to everones dissapointment, and went to get some sleep. On my way out the manager of the bowl asked me what room i was staying in and how i was enjoying the place, what i thought to be small talk.

The next night, at about 1130 the phone for our room was called. My dad answered it and said, uhh matt its for you. It was the manager of the bowl asking me to come down and put on a show for their socials again, apparently other guests in the place thought i was some type of trick shot bowler and they wanted to watch me bowl again! So down i went with my vortex, put on some alley shoes, and started to bowl again. Not bowling as well that night, but still keeping over the card. When i went upto pay the manager laughed and said, Sir people have been staying just to watch you bowl, we have made enough money in the cafateria to cover your bowling, dont worry about it. I was shocked, for the first time it appeared i have acheived some sort of stardom.

We were in malaysia for a week, and i bowled for the manager all the nights but 2. And it seemed that my greatest success of my time over there was yet to come. It was 330 in the morning malaysia time, and i had just finished a game and said, i dont think i can bowl anymore, but the manager convinsed me to bowl one more. I wasnt bowling particularly well that night, and everyones focus wasnt primarily on me, everyone was bowling, and occasionally taking a glance over.

I started my last game with 2 splits, and feeling pretty stupid about both shots. Then went off the sheet with the last 10 strikes. The place was going nuts when i bowled the 10th of them. As a social based center with no leagues my 257 was the highest game ever bowled there. Ide never felt so good about a game with 2 splits in it.

Anyway, i know that all sounds a bit far fetched, but its all true, bowling wise was easily the best week of my life. I knew the malaysians were bowling crazy, but that just astonished me.

So TWOHAND834 i can relate to what you were saying, about gettin some respect when you walk in a center, its a great feeling aint it? And dont worry about those people that you went to school with, here in australia people dont think much of bowlers either, i used to get given crap about it all the time.

Hope you enjoyed my story as much as i liked typing it.
Good luck and high scoring

Bones - we agree again!

Although I'm not yet eligible for senior leagues, that time is approaching quickly. But I bowl in one handicap league - been in that league for 6 years now. Not everyone is a good bowler - heck - most of 'em just are there for the socialization. BUT - It's a great league, and I have a lot of fun bowling it. I'm not giving it up.

HOWEVER - Enjoyment - deep down fulfilling kind of stuff - is competing in the hunt in scratch events, whether they're tournaments, league nights, brackets at league - whatever. Doesn't matter what, as long as it's scratch. I can put numbers up with the best of 'em (and sometimes fail miserably), but as long as I can compete, there's something really great about it.
